In 1881, Phoenix was incorporated, making it one of the oldest Arizona cities. It was already a ‘big city’ with 2,500 residents.

The recent census showed more than 1.6 million residents. There are 4.5 million residents across the region. Phoenix ranks as the largest metro region in the Southwest and the 11th largest in the United States.

Large companies are headquartered here, including electronics-focused Avnet and the mining company Freeport McMoran. Aviation and aerospace companies have the longest history of fueling the area’s economic growth. When Luke Air Force Base was just Luke Field, aviation began to attract businesses to the area. The headquarters for the Honeywell Aerospace division is in Phoenix. Places to Go in Phoenix

Phoenix is rich with museums, cultural events, and theater. There are unique places such as the large Musical Instrument Museum. It hosts the largest collection of musical instruments in the world.

While the area is dry, there are still plenty of swimming holes, fishing ponds, and boating areas at area parks, such as Lake Pleasant.

Day Trips around Phoenix

Visiting old neighborhoods is a good way to spend a day. You can head to Montezuma's Castle to see one of the most beautiful and amazing architectural wonders of old America. The southern Sinagua people are responsible for the architectural wonder at the Palatki Heritage Site. Mysterious and imposing, the Casa Grande Ruins offers another look at old Arizona.

You can head up I-17 to Flagstaff and take in the views from 6990 feet above sea level. On the way, you can take the Red Rock Scenic Byway to Sedona. From there, you can take US-89A through Oak Creek Canyon and the Coconino National Forest. Slide Rock State Park is a great place to cool off if you can find a parking space.

When you have an off-roader, you can take more of the dirt trails that take you further into the wilderness. Apache Road is one of the most unique and historic, taking you from pavement to gravel to dirt as you head toward Lake Roosevelt.
