Significant Moments in Goodyear AZ History
It is true that this Arizona town got its name from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. As+
early as 1917, the company was growing cotton at an area farm to utilize in its tires. Goodyear Aircraft placed a factory near the farm to build the subassemblies for planes during World War II.
Goodyear had “tiny houses” before there was a trend. The company wanted quick housing.
Moved by trailer from the factory, the 8-foot wide box-like structure had wings. These pulled out to become bedrooms. In all, the house had 255 square feet of living area. This unusual architecture became known as Wingfoot houses.
The aircraft company left after World War II. However, it helped that Luke Air Force Base was close by.
In 1946, the town incorporated. It had 250 apartments and 151 homes. The future was looking bright.
Fast forward to the late 2000’s, the Goodyear Park is completed. The 10,000-seat stadium includes training facilities for major league baseball teams. Opening in 2009, the facility quickly became home to two MLB teams. The park schedule is full year round with local events and festivals.
Modern Goodyear Living
The 2020 Census confirmed what Goodyear residents already know. The city keeps growing. The census documented 95,294 residents in 2020. A more recent count shows 101,000.
