2024 Ford Expedition Review | 2024 Expedition Max Review
The 2024 Ford Expedition and 2024 Ford Expedition Max are big and bigger 3 row SUVs that function as a living room on wheels. Families and family drivers are equally well taken care of.
Is the new model year an improvement? Get straight answers in this regular and Expedition Max review.
Expedition vs Expedition Max Seating and Trim Levels
The Expedition XL STX is a five-seat SUV with an enormous cargo hold. Like the 3-row Expedition and Expedition Max, it has lots of second-row legroom. These seats slide, recline and fold flat.
If you need more rear seats, the Expedition XLT and Expedition Max XLT are standard 8-person cabins with a 7-seat option. Regular Expedition cabins are rated at 171.9 cubic feet. The longer wheelbase Max editions claim 172 cubes. So the passenger space is only minimally affected.
Keeping the kids happy, the Expedition provides 41.5 inches of legroom for the second row. However, the sliding seats can push back and claim 42.6 inches. The third row has 36.1 inches, but if the second row is in its forward position, they can claim a remarkable 40.9 inches.
Second-row seats have been designed to provide a way to get into the backseat without moving child seats. For that matter, there’s a lot of space that allows parents to take kids in and out with minimal hassle.
Trailering Comparison
Every 2024 Expedition and Expedition Max comes with a Class IV trailer hitch receiver and trailer sway control. A trailer package can add the essentials that make towing easier. Ford offers unique systems that can help the driver stay out of harm’s way while hooking up, parking or simply driving.
As for towing, the short-wheelbase Expedition can tow slightly more than the long-wheelbase Max. Either way, these 3 row large SUVs are as tough as Ford trucks.
When properly equipped, the RWD model can pull up to 9,300 pounds. The 4WD Expedition can manage a hefty 9,200 pounds. The Expedition Max has a tow rating of 9,000 pounds, still excellent.
You’ll find that a Honda Pilot is limited to 5,000 pounds, and the Chevrolet Suburban is limited to 8,300 pounds in maximum towing capacity. Clearly Expeditions are the heavy duty trailer towing choice for full size SUV shoppers.
Cargo Room Comparison
The regular Expedition has 20.9 cubic feet of open space in the cargo hold. This makes it two to four cubes larger than the average 3 row SUV hold. If the seats are folded, it grows to 57.6 or 104.6 cubic feet of cargo volume.
Able to seat a crowd and bring along their gear, the Expedition Max cargo hold is rated at 34.3 cubic feet. This huge area is perfect for vacation luggage for a big family. If you don’t need so many seats, that space grows to 79.6 or 121.5 cubic feet.
Expedition and Expedition Max XLT models have a power liftgate to help you access the load. The rear window can be manually lifted to access the hold. A cargo management system and a cargo protector are standard on all models.
Seating Considerations
The 5-seat XL STX, XLT, and Max XLT have an 8-way power driver’s seat and cloth upholstery. Second-row seats recline for more wiggle room.
XLT models have a split bench seat with available Power-fold tip-and-glide seats. The 60/40 Power-fold third row is standard. This adds a power-recline to the third row seats.
You can choose the 7-person XLT in regular or Max to get center captain’s chairs. These are offered as Power-fold tip-and-slide captain’s chairs. There’s an option to upgrade the driver’s chair to a 10-way power chair with memory and power ventilation.
Expedition Limited models start out with 7-person seating, but they do offer the 8-person layout. The front row has a memory-enabled 10-way power driver’s chair and 8-way power passenger seat with power ventilation. Both the front and second row seats have power heat functions.
Timberline models come in 8-person editions with an available 7-person layout. King Ranch trims are strictly 7-person editions, but the top Platinum trim gives you a choice of the 7- or 8-seat style.
Platinum drivers are treated to Ford’s multi-contour seats. This provides you with Active Motion Massage to make your daily commute or long trip more enjoyable. When you compare this to the Jeep Wagoneer, you’ll find that the Expedition Platinum luxuries make it a much better buy.
Cabin Features and Amenities
The standard cloth upholstery on the XL STX and two XLT models can be upgraded to Active X leatherette. Limited models have leather-trimmed seating, including perforated leather on the front seats.
Timberline models have Active X upholstery, a special heathered cloth insert, and fun tangerine stitching for a racy atmosphere. King Ranch interiors wear a Mesa-and-Ebony color combination. The Del Rio leather covers seats, doors, steering wheel and more.
Tri-zone electronic automatic temperature controls keep the air flowing in the Expedition cabin. There are auxiliary controls on both the second and third row.
For the kids, there’s an available dual-headrest rear entertainment system. Amazon Fire TV connectivity is built in. The available WiFi hotspot lets everyone find something to watch on their smart devices.
Expedition Cockpit
The standard Ford Expedition cockpit has an 8-inch productivity screen and a Sync 4 infotainment system with a large 12-inch screen. The top system is a vertical 15.5-inch Sync 4A infotainment screen and a 12.4-inch gauge cluster screen. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on the Limited, Timberline, King Ranch and Platinum trims.
Cockpits are less cluttered thanks to push button start and a rotary shift dial. There are smart-charging ports on the first and second row. Expedition Limited models come equipped with a wireless charging pad and two smart-charging ports on the third row.
With 22 speakers, B&O Unleashed Sound System surrounds passengers with concert-like music. All systems have available connected navigation, but the higher trims have built in navigation with a 3-year complimentary subscription. These trims have HD Radio and available SiriusXM with 360L.
Ecoboost vs High Ecoboost Performance
Whether regular or Expedition Max, the standard engine is a speedy turbo V6. Better than an old-fashioned V8, this smart machine generates 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard with four-wheel drive available throughout the lineup.
Available on Limited models, a twin-turbo V6 jacks that output up to 400 horses and 480 lb-ft. Platinum models add Continuous Controlled Damping. This has a suspension preview capability that helps it alter movements before it hits the curves, bumps or dips.
At 9.7 or 9.8 inches, there’s plenty of ground clearance. Four-wheel drive adds terrain management with settings for sand, mud-ruts, and grass-gravel snow. The FX Off Road Package adds an electronic limited slip differential and other trail equipment.
As the top pick for the trail, Expedition Timberline models raise ground clearance to 10.6 inches. Standard features include large all-terrain tires, premium off-road shocks, an upgraded suspension, and plenty of skid plates for protection.
Thanks to a high-output Ecoboost engine, Expedition Timberline drivers command a whopping 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This twin-turbo V6 is offered on rear-wheel drive models with the Stealth performance package.
The 10-speed automatic transmission and two-speed four-wheel drive help make the most of the torque at low speeds. Trail Control is essentially a slow-speed version of cruise control. This Timberline feature regulates the throttle and braking, leaving the driver to steer.
Ford-Exclusive Towing Aids
An optional heavy duty trailer towing package is available on all trims of both the short- and long-wheelbase Expeditions. This adds important equipment including a trailer brake controller.
Plus, the blind spot monitor expands to include the trailer. This helps drivers stay safer when making decisions about whether to change lanes.
Available on XLT and higher editions, Pro Trailer Backup Assist is designed to help you park the trailer in one direction while maintaining the SUV’s straight trajectory. It’s unique and quite useful, going well beyond what you can do with just your rearview mirrors.
With the 360-degree camera system, Ford adds trailer reverse guidance. This adds yet another level of assistance for your slow maneuvers while trailering.
With four-wheel drive, a tow-haul drive mode aims to make trailering easier to manage. Ford 4WD makes it possible to flat-tow the Expedition. This can be useful if you need to tow your SUV.
Driver Aids
With assistance from almost every angle, the 2024 Ford Expedition is a good companion to the family driver. Ford CoPilot 360 watches the front, warning about forward collision dangers and pedestrians. It may apply an autobrake to help the driver avoid a crash.
To watch the sides, there’s a blind spot monitor and a lane watch. Lane keeping assistance helps the driver maintain the lane. For parking, drivers have a rearview camera and a rear cross traffic alert.
Adaptive cruise control reduces driver duties in slow-and-go situations. Semi-autonomous Blue Cruise goes even further. In designated Blue zones, the driver becomes the SUV monitor as the automatic driving system does even more of the work.
Exclusive to Ford, post-impact braking can help if the vehicle is hit. This ensures that the Expedition will stop even if the driver is too confused or hurt to brake the vehicle.
Park Assist is perfect for big rigs like the 2024 Expedition and 2024 Expedition Max. It takes care of parallel and perpendicular parking. The available 360-degree camera system is another vital tool for keeping the Expedition in top shape.
Whether you need 5, 7 or 8 seats, the Expedition lineup has something for you. Check it out at your Phoenix Ford dealer. You are invited to schedule a test drive.
