Ford Super Duty
2023 Ford Super Duty in Goodyear, AZ
2023 Ford Super Duty Review | F-Series Work Trucks
When you choose a work truck, you expect it to do its job. With the 2023 Ford Super Duty, you may get even more than a good worker. Special devices and unique features keep drivers and their loads on track and on time.
Bumper steps help the driver load and unload the bed. Driving assistance keeps your valuable payload out of harm’s way. Towing assistance reduces the chances your tandem truck and trailer will encounter a crash scenario.
Once again leading its class for this 2023 model year, Ford F-Series trucks are offering first-ever features such as Trailer Navigation, Pro Power Onboard, and Pro Upfit Integration.
Tough and Capable Gasoline Engines
Before we get into the specifics of truck technology, we’ll look at how capable the F-250, F-350 and F-450 can be. Trim levels are packed with more performance features, including standard four-wheel drive on XLT models.
Ford ingenuity reduces weight through the use of high-grade aluminum and sophisticated composites. This allows it to make each heavy duty pickup truck tougher and more capable without weighing it down.
For instance, the Super Duty 6.8-liter V8 is a new unit that lost weight but improved performance for this model year. Ford engineers managed to boost low-end torque. That’s the essential ingredient when driving up mountains and other steep inclines. It’s helpful in traffic, shortening how many seconds it takes to zoom from zero to 60 miles per hour.
Output has increased to 405 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. It is often the perfect match for the F-250 or F-350 owner. Only Ford has TorqueShift transmissions with heavy duty capability specific to the engine. Ford was the first to offer 10-speed automatic transmissions as standard on a super duty lineup.
Then there’s the 7.3-liter V8. Ford has targeted best-in-class numbers with these super duty engines. Its 430-horsepower output is assisted by 485 lb-ft of torque. Taking care of heat build-up, there are vertical vents to direct air under the hood.
Power Stroke Turbo Diesel Engines
The 6.7-liter Power Stroke is a V8 turbo diesel like few others. This F-450 standard is a favorite F-350 upgrade. It’s even available on the F-250. 2022 Ford Super Duty drivers command 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque.
Alternatively, there’s a high-output Power Stroke diesel engine with a special 90-degree layout that benefits from a water-jacketed turbocharger. You can expect a best-in-class 500 horsepower and best-class 1,200 lb-ft of torque from this performance diesel.
With this level of refined performance, tow ratings can be as much as 23,000 lbs with a gooseneck hitch.
Work-Smart Dash Tech
Dash tech needs to work as smart as you do. That’s why the Ford Sync system is such an asset on the road. You’ve got either an 8-inch or 12-inch tablet-like touch screen. Some models also have a customizable 12-inch digital screen instead of a traditional instrument cluster.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will connect with your phone for maximum app use. This ensures that every truck in the Super Duty lineup is capable of providing navigation whether it’s through your map apps or built-in navigation.
Ford Pass Connect is an app on your smartphone that obviously goes wherever you may be on your worksite. Then, when you need it, you can check to see if your truck needs gas or you can use the remote starter to cool off your ride before you get back into it.
Power Up or Shut it Off
On the one hand, Fleet Start Inhibit allows managers to schedule when a vehicle can be started. On the other hand, only Ford Super Duty has power take off connections on every chassis cab model. Pro Power Onboard, a new 2023 available feature, provides 2 KW of power. This lets you run power tools, appliances, lights or other gear you need.
At remote worksites, busy managers and other drivers will appreciate 5G Wi-Fi with the available hotspot for up to 10 smart devices. It can be used both in and around the truck. Plus, the 5G capability makes mapping faster. It allows for software updates while driving. When parked, this smart work truck lets you keep a tablet upright with a special center console slot.
Towing Intelligence
Few trucks have the payload and towing IQ of a Ford truck. For this model year, Super Duty trucks offer best-in-class conventional tow ratings of 28,000 lbs with certain F350 DRW models and 30,000 lbs for the F350 SRW models.
Plus Ford has cutting-edge tech that isn’t available from other brands. New for 2023, the Trailer Navigation system can take trailer size into consideration and recommend the more logical route. Also new, there is a tailgate down camera and a tailgate down reverse parking aid.
Pro Trailer Hitch Assist can automatically align the hitch ball to the trailer receiver. The Smart Hitch can tell you the tongue weight to ensure proper distribution.
Staying safe is easier with a blind spot monitor that includes the trailer. Since it can monitor up to 33 feet, this works for almost anything you might tow. It shows you when it is safe to change lanes and when it is not!
Cargo Intelligence and Payload Capacity
For payloads, Onboard Scales work in real time. This helps you maximize your load without overstressing the truck’s capability. First-ever tailgate-down cameras reduce the chances of damaging this important bed feature. Furthermore, reverse sensing can take into account the extra length of a lowered tailgate, ensuring that you stop on time.
There are other cameras that can show you what’s in the cargo hold, helping you keep an eye on your cargo. All new, Trailer Theft Alert may use the FordPass app to warn you if someone is trying to disconnect a loaded trailer.
With 78.5 cubic feet of walled space, the 8-foot bed is a mammoth hauler. It claims 98.1 inches in length with 21-inch walls. Width is 50.5 inches (wheel wells), 66.9 inches (widest point) and 60.5 inches (tailgate). The 6.75-foot bed is just as wide and tall. It measures 81.9 inches long. Cargo space is rated at 65.4 cubic feet.
Best-in-class payload capacity is to be expected from heavy duty pickup trucks this big and this tough. If you need the maximum capability, the 8-foot bed is rated for up to 8,000 lbs with the F350 DRW Regular Cab XL 4x2.
More Driver Assistance
In the last few years, Super Duty trucks have become eligible for some of the best crash avoidance features. This includes a forward collision system with an autobrake. This year, Ford introduces front and rear brake assist for slow maneuvers. It can watch for objects as well as cars.
This is the first year you can get adaptive cruise control with lane centering and intelligent stop-and-go capability. That’s a remarkable perk for those who are constantly behind the wheel of their heavy duty pickup truck.
XL, XLT and Top Trim Levels
The XL is always the go-to trim level for businesses or individuals who must put affordability at the top of their list. It continues to be a particularly good value, especially with its new touchscreen as standard.
XLT trim levels have become packed with more must-have features. The 12-inch touchscreen is standard, bringing more capability. Plus, the Ford F250 Super Duty XLT now has standard four-wheel drive to ensure top towing capability.
If you are looking for luxuries, the lineup is packed with choices you’ll recognize. If you can step beyond the Lariat, you can choose from the Super Duty King Ranch, Limited and Platinum cabins. Massaging, ventilated leather seats are definitely driver favorites.
XL Off-Road and Tremor Off-Road Packages
With the XL Off-road package, there’s much more than four-wheel drive to challenge the trail. In addition to Ford’s terrain management features, the special sub trim level has an electronic locking rear differential. To help it avoid trouble, the air dam has been raised. Plus, there are 33-inch rugged tires and additional skid plates. This F 250 Super Duty model even has water-fording axle vent tubes, making it closer to the Tremor than ever before.
Of course, the Tremor Off-Road Package is even better equipped. It has even bigger 35-inch Goodyear all terrain tires and a front-end lift to help it skirt danger. A limited-slip differential assists the Dana heavy duty front axle. Rock crawl driving mode is standard, along with Trail Control.
For the first time, Super Duty Tremor trucks have class-exclusive Trail Turn Assist. This allows the four wheels to turn at slightly different angles as needed when in close quarters.
Regular, Super or Crew Cabins
The regular cab can host up to three people while the Super Crew adds a back row to double the seating. However, if you need room for tall workmates, the Super Duty Crew Cab is amazingly big. The cabin’s second row passenger has 40.4 inches of headroom and 43.6 inches of legroom.
You can stow away valuables in a hidden compartment under the 2nd-row bench. If you fold the second-row seats, Ford Crew Cabs have 52.1 cu ft of interior cargo space.
