2023 Ford Mustang Mach e Review - Ford EV Explained
Popular and contemporary, the 2023 Mustang Mach E is true to its nameplate. The Ford EV is ready to challenge Tesla models and any other electric vehicles.
A combination of personality, performance, and cutting-edge technology has given the first Ford electric SUV a place in the busy EV marketplace. With its pricing and driving range, it is clearly positioning itself to challenge hybrid SUVs as well.
Still, this electric car has to work to prove itself as truly competitive. Is it capable of replacing your gas-powered SUV? How does the packaging keep pace with the price point? This Mach E review has answers about trim levels, electric range, utility, capability, connectivity, and driver assistance.
Standard Driving Range and Performance
The name Mustang was chosen for a very specific reason. There’s never been a slow Pony car, and there isn’t a slow Ford Mustang EV in this lineup. In typical Ford fashion, you can even find their performance figures. As Motor Trend reports, these electric SUVs are quick and driftable.
Easily one of the most popular trim levels, the California Route 1 is now strictly all-wheel drive for the 2023 model year. With its extended range battery pack, this Mach e can go up to 312 miles before it needs a charge.
Drivers like this speedy model. It only needs 4.8 seconds to do the 0-to-60 mph sprint. There’s plenty of muscle with 346 horsepower. A total of 428 pound-feet of torque can be achieved thanks to a powertrain that features the top battery pack, a front-wheel motor, and a rear-wheel motor. RWD models do the sprint in 5.8 seconds while AWD models shave that down to 5.2 seconds.
Mach E Select with rear wheel drive is the most affordable, and it has an EPA estimated range of 247 miles. Output is 266 horsepower, plenty to propel this compact SUV. Torque is rated at an ample 317 lb-ft. The most affordable all-wheel drive choice is also the Select. With dual motors, Select AWD models increase torque output to 428 lb-ft.
If you are good with the Select horsepower, but you want a long range. The Premium RWD has you covered. Since it has the long-range battery, it can achieve 306 miles of driving range. Offering yet another choice, Premium AWD models have a 290-mile driving range and that remarkable 428 lb-ft of torque.
GT and GT Performance Powertrains
Adding top Mustang capability, GT Performance and GT editions claim 260 or 270 miles of electric range. These models have the dual powertrain layout, but the secondary electric motor has been seriously upgraded.
GT and GT Performance Ford EVs are redefining what Americans expect from everyday electric vehicles. GT models crank out 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. This permits a sprint time of just 3.8 seconds.
As if this weren’t enough of a thrill ride, GT performance models take it one notch higher. The re-tuned output is 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque. This shrinks the sprint to a mere 3.5 seconds.
To be this speedy, it helps to have the MagneRide Damping System. Responsive in the moment, this adaptive suspension reduces bounce and improves handling.
Upscale Atmosphere, Contemporary Design
The contemporary design is uncluttered, even with the many integrated technologies and necessary knobs. Drivers enjoy a standard power-adjustable chair and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel. A wireless charger and USB ports keep you connected. Owners will especially appreciate the PaaK feature that lets you use your phone as a key.
Both positions can take advantage of dual-zone automatic climate controls. This should keep you cool, not cold, on a hot Phoenix AZ summer day. Adding to this Ford EV’s intrinsic value, designers have created an adult-friendly second row. There’s room to stretch when you’ve got 38.1 inches of legroom.
Connecting you to your smartphone map apps as well as built-in navigation, the infotainment system has Sync4A capacity, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This smart display is a vertical 15.5-inch touchscreen with a tablet-like responsiveness.

Standard Driver Assistance
Ford starts off Mach e shoppers with extensive collision avoidance features. Watching the sides, there’s road edge detection, blind spot assist, and lane departure assistance. Watching the front, there’s an automatic emergency brake function as part of the forward collision assist. One of its most exclusive features is the post-impact braking that tries to reduce damage during a collision situation.
Semi-automated driving features include Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering Assist. Drivers will appreciate additional features such as evasive steering assist and traffic sign recognition. Parking is easier thanks to the standard rear sensors and rearview camera. A rear cross traffic alert is a standard active feature.
California Route 1 and Premium Trim Levels
These trims, while sporting distinctive exterior elements, provide similar upgrades. Both have the panoramic fixed-glass roof that makes the cabin feel even more spacious. They have welcome lights in the form of Pony projection lamps.
Premium and California Route 1 cabins have heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a memory-enabled driver’s power chair. A B&O sound system has 10 speakers with some wrapped in fabric for the most integrated design. Multi-color ambient lighting eases stress during nighttime drives.
Standard reverse brake assist is a good partner in parking situations. Parking is easier with the active park assist. There’s more automation with BlueCruise for hands-free driving situations. A 360-degree camera lets you see a split view of your surroundings on your screen. To experience the tech, you can take a test drive. Schedule online at a time convenient for you. GT and GT Performance Trim Levels
GT seats are a special sport-bolstered style, and they are covered in ActiveX upholstery with a Miko insert for softness. Copper metallic stitching adds a sporty contrast. GTPE seats wear a special Miko perforated reflective insert with Gray Active X and a metallic stitch.
Exterior details include red brake calipers for color and an illuminated pony badge for nighttime curb appeal. A special Pony package adds blacked-out elements to GT Performance models.
Cargo and Utility
The Ford EV layout allowed for extra storage up front. This compartment, called a frunk, measures 4.7 cubic feet. On the one hand, this area is water resistant and dry. On the other hand, it has a drain. This gives it more uses, such as storage for muddy boots or as a beverage cooler.
Owners will really like the large 29-cubic foot cargo hold. There’s an adjustable floor that provides sub-floor storage. If you are looking at the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq, you’ll notice that it lags behind the Mustang in storage space.
Naturally this contemporary ride has fold-down rear seats. This increases usable cargo area to 60 cubic feet. While the build is lightweight, Ford still offers a power liftgate to access your gear easily.
