2023 Ford Mustang Review | Convertibles, GTs and More
The original Pony car is expected to focus on the driving experience, but modern buyers want contemporary interiors. How does the 2023 Ford Mustang do both with equal skill?
At first glance, the lineup is familiar. Coupes and convertibles are offered with Ecoboost, GT, and Shelby GT500 powertrains.
Upgrades, however, keep pushing the powertrains to achieve more. Technology and design are intermingled in a driver-focused cockpit. Even as it becomes more fun, it becomes safer with today’s cutting-edge driving aids. Here’s what you need to know about this model year.
Cabins Today
2023 Mustangs have been designed to make it comfortable and spacious. For instance, legroom is best in class. The front seat has well-bolstered chairs for speedy maneuvers but they are also known as a comfortable perch even on long drives.
The center-console bin is larger and more useful than those of class rivals. Compared to the tiny 9.1-cu ft trunk of the Camaro, the 13.5-cu ft trunk is enormous. The smart designers gave it a broad opening and an easy liftover height.
Unlike the first Mustang cabins, these are well-equipped even at the initial trim level. The Fastback Ecoboost cabin boasts an 8-inch touchscreen. This Sync infotainment system is aided by smartphone integration with either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
On the Mustang Ecoboost Premium trim level, the cabin gains a 12-inch digital cluster. This adds another racy detail to the sporty Mustang cabin.
Depending on the trim, you can keep your cool with automatic temperature controls. The driver can set it and forget it. This system will do the rest. Then there are the ventilated, power-adjustable seats .
Shelby GT500 models have special Recaro bucket seats. Upgrades include real carbon fiber and soft leather.
Convertibles have a lush interior that can open up to the outdoors in seconds. The power-down top tucks away for the most aerodynamic air flow. You won’t find anything like that on the Dodge Challenger.
Performance Features
Ford has developed a cost-effective, fuel efficient powertrain with the type of output that a sports car driver wants. This Ecoboost four-cylinder engine easily challenges a V6. Ecoboost drivers command 310 horsepower while still enjoying excellent fuel economy.
For the High Performance package, those same engineers took the same engine and made it even better. This unit kicks out 330 horsepower. The rate of torque rises to 350 pound-feet.
Shoppers still get their choice of an exciting manual transmission or a highly capable 10-speed automatic transmission. You’ll appreciate the way these gear-shifters harness low-speed grunt.
Stepping Up
At 450 horsepower, the GT is a fun way to step up to more performance. When you are behind the wheel, you’ve got extra help from racier tuning and better Brembo brakes. The Mustang GT Performance package adds a limited slip differential. This helps the car maintain traction without slowing it down.
At 470 horsepower, the Mustang Mach 1 is a special breed. Not only does it have a special look, but it has refined chassis components that are usually reserved for the track focused Shelby.
Of course, the 2023 Mustang Shelby GT500 is a wonder to drive. Ford has given this ride one of the most powerful engines available in a street car. This supercharged V08 generates 760 horsepower.
Adaptive dampers assist with ride quality and handling. Shoppers can add the handling package for even more finely tuned suspension adjustments and more aerodynamic features. A special track pack adds even more of the good stuff, including carbon fiber wheels and a front splitter.
A Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission expertly controls the turbo V8’s 625 lb-ft of torque. Whether taking to the track or just entering a busy highway, the 2023 Shelby GT500 does the 0-60 mph sprint in a mere 3.4 seconds.
Driver Aids
While Mustang drivers love to control the flow, they usually don’t mind a little help, and Ford offers quite a few driver aids for the 2023 model year. To avoid side swipes, systems include blind spot monitoring, lane centering, and a rear cross traffic watch.
To avoid rear ending a vehicle, CoPilot360 includes a forward collision warning with an autobrake response. Then there is adaptive cruise control which lets you enjoy assistance even in busy traffic.
You really need to see the latest Mustang to know which model is right for you. Come take a test drive soon, but first take a look at the current inventory.
