2023 Ford Expedition Max Review
For this new model year, the 2023 Ford Expedition is surpassed only by the 2023 Ford Expedition Max. Either ride is really a family living room on wheels.
We’ve brought together all the facts on this 3 row SUV including specifications, trim levels, and technologies. This analysis includes a look at the unique Expedition Timberline and 5-seat XL STX. Keep scrolling to find details important to your family’s lifestyle in Phoenix AZ.
Expedition Max Dimensions
Riding on a long wheelbase, a Max has 172 cu ft for passengers. Legroom is flexible on the second row, ranging from 41.5 inches to 42.6 inches. This row seats three, unless you choose captain’s chairs to replace the bench.
Third rows are spacious enough for many adults and big teens thanks to 36.1 inches of legroom. If the second row is pushed forward, legroom grows to 40.9 inches. This row also seats 3 for a total of 8.
There’s plenty of space for carseats and booster chairs. Once installed, you can still move the second-row seat to access the third.
Even though it rides on a smaller wheelbase, the standard SUV manages to maintain 171.9 cubic feet for passengers. This means that legroom on both rear rows is the same as the Max.
Always providing choices, Ford lets you choose an Expedition XL STX for a five-person layout with an enormous cargo hold.
Max Cargo Room
With a power liftgate and a lift-up cargo window, it’s easy to reach your gear in a 2023 Expedition Max. The cargo hold measures 34.3 cubes. Folding the seats, owners can claim 79.6 cu ft while still seat five. Folding row two, the free area measures 121.5 cu ft.
A regular Expedition has more cargo space than a large sedan. Its cargo hold measures 20.9 cubes. You can expand that to 57.6 cubes or 104.6 cubes by folding unused seats.
Max Towing Capability
The Max can pull up to 9,000 pounds. It has a standard hitch receiver for Class IV trailers. Shoppers generally add the heavy-duty trailer package to claim more towing assistance.
Only Ford offers trailering features that make hooking up and parking quite easy. Pro Trailer Backup Assist takes the work out of parking by providing a knob that steers the trailer while the steering wheel takes care of the SUV itself.
Another standout feature is a towing extension for the BLIS system. Blind spot monitoring can be applied to the vehicle and tandem trailer. That’s sure to make maneuvering safer for the Expedition, its passengers, and anyone on the road with them.
With less length and less weight than the Max, 2023 Ford Expeditions can pull a bit more. Standard four-wheel drive models can handle up to 9,200 pounds. Rear-wheel drive models can handle up to 9,300 pounds.
XL STX, XLT and Max XLT Trim Levels
Like the 2022 Ford Expedition, this new model year is ready to challenge everyone from the Chevrolet Tahoe to high priced luxury SUVs. Base trim levels are a trio of editions for different purposes. The 5-seat XL STX, regular Ford Expedition XLT and Max XLT will have similar features, but differ in size and/or number of seats.
A power-adjustable driver’s chair faces a fully adjustable steering wheel in this SUV’s well-stocked cockpit. Mesa AZ shoppers are always glad to find out that power-ventilated seats are an available XLT feature.
The Ford Expedition price includes an 8-inch productivity screen matched with a generous 12-inch Sync touch screen. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay ensure advanced smartphone connectivity. Cockpits are kept neat and tidy with aspects such as push button start and a rotary-dial gearshifter.
Three-row models have a tri-zone automatic climate system, additional second-row controls, and additional AC vents to accommodate every passenger. Second row seats have a reclining function to help passengers in any Expedition get comfy.
CenterSlide allows the middle seat to move for different purposes such as providing more third row legroom, moving a child in carseat closer to the parents, or simply allowing more space for entry and exit. This seat flat-folds to become a useful table when it isn’t needed for seating.
Limited Luxury Liners
With the Limited trim, Expeditions become like luxury SUVs. Leather seats and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system are standards. Overhead a panoramic vista roof provides natural light. Dual power chairs and power-adjustable pedals make parents more comfortable in Peoria AZ.
King Ranch models provide a classic Ford design motif. A distinctive exterior is marked by its stone gray trim. Power-deployable running boards and large 22-inch wheels add to its upscale stance.
Ready to challenge any luxury SUV, the Expedition Platinum has 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio surround. Lush leather covers this 7-seat layout. Dual power front seats gain power ventilation and power-massage functions.
For the most precise Sync infotainment ever, there’s a tablet-like 15.5-inch touchscreen in easy reach of your fingertips or voice commands. Ford’s parking camera is upgraded from rearview to include the entire SUV perimeter.
Max Performance Choices
Either Expedition is quick to move with the standard Ecoboost engine. This turbo V6 engine spits out 375 horsepower. That’s assisted by a remarkable 470 lb-ft of torque. Nothing more is needed for a smooth and enjoyable driving experience, and it is enhanced by the knowledge that fuel economy is better than it would be for a similarly powered V8.
Offered only on the regular wheelbase, the Expedition Timberline has a 440-horsepower Ecoboost engine. However, you’ll find this engine on Expedition Stealth packages as well. Torque output is 510 pound-feet.
Recognizing that many family drivers want more, the Platinum Ecoboost is a twin-turbo V6. It drives like a V8 with 480 lb-ft of torque and 400 horsepower. Aiming for the most luxurious ride quality, it has active noise cancellation and an active damping suspension.
Max Off Roading and the Timberline Experience
Ground clearance is 9.7 or 9.8 inches. With available four-wheel drive, Ford’s terrain management system assists drivers. A sand setting helps with low traction. Grass-gravel-snow mode helps with loose terrain. A mud-ruts mode helps the big rig glide over very uneven surfaces as well as sticky soils.
Offering 10.6 inches of ground clearance, 2023 Ford Expedition Timberlines are built on the standard wheelbase for better approach and departure angles. Ford Trail Control is an exclusive device that can anticipate how much braking and throttle are needed to keep the big rig moving while the driver focuses on steering.
These Ford-tough SUVs handle the trail with the help of protective skid plates and big all-terrain tires. A rough-road suspension and premium off-road shocks control bounce.
Slotting between XLT and Limited editions, Timberline cabins are specially decorated to reflect their adventurous nature. The driver’s cockpit has power-adjustable pedals and a power driver’s chair.
The FX Off Road package is an off-roading choice. An electronic limited slip differential that helps with sport driving on the road or trail. A surround view camera reveals the trail.
Driving Assistance and Crash Avoidance
Anyone buying a big SUV is likely to be hyper focused on safety. After all, 3 row SUVs are purchased by parents, grandparents and others who transport kids. Naturally they want the best protections.
The 2023 Ford Expedition for sale meets and exceeds that baseline. It’s as safe as it probably can be, if you judge the SUV by its 5-star federal safety rating.
Fords have an important after-crash feature called post-impact braking. If sensors detect a hit, the autobrake will start slowing the vehicle to help the driver. This is especially important if the driver has been incapacitated.
Whether it’s just a scratch or something far more life-threatening, it’s better never to have that wreck. Ford CoPilot 360 is aboard every Expedition to help with that. Forward collision warning and pedestrian watches are made more meaningful with an autobrake to back it up.
When your Expedition Max has Park Assist, you’ll enjoy parallel parking that is as simple and carefree as perpendicular parking. On long highway drives, you can use Blue Cruise. This is a step up from everyday adaptive cruise control. These semi-automated and automated systems only require a minimum of effort from an alert driver.
Many 3 row SUVS have lighting assistance for entry and exit, but the Max goes a bit further. It offers perimeter zone lighting which can be programmed or utilized via the car screen or Ford app.
