2022 Ford Ranger Review | Midsize Truck
With good fuel economy and excellent power, the 2022 Ford Ranger is a remarkably advanced midsize truck. Few rivals can touch it when it comes to gas mileage or capability. In almost every comparison, the Ranger comes out ahead on ownership costs.
Does this truck have what you need? Check out this review. We’ve tried to include the facts and figures that will help you when making up your mind. A test drive is the best way to make a comparison, and you are invited any time to our dealership.
Size Choices
Choices start with three body styles. The SuperCab is offered with two beds while the SuperCrew is offered with the smaller choice. The beds are either 6 feet or 5 feet. The bed sides are higher to provide more safe storage space.
The SuperCrew has a spacious cabin with a full back row. Seating 5, it has 97.6 cubic feet of passenger space. The SuperCab seats four, and it has 89.2 cubic feet of space.
Payload varies with the size of the bed and the type of drivetrain. The SuperCrew 4x2 can handle the maximum 1,860 pounds while the 4x4 can handle up to 1,650 pounds. The beds are rated at 51.8 cubic feet and measure 72.8 inches long.
SuperCrew 4x2 models can haul 1,770 pounds while the 4x4 model can handle 1,560 pounds. The Tremor package, a Supercrew 4x4, is rated at 1,430 pounds. This box is 61 inches long and measures 43.3 cubic feet.
Towing Capability
All models can achieve the maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. XL standards include trailer sway control. The rear bumper is ready for a trailer hitch receiver. It has 4-pin wiring and ball mounting provisions.
The tow package is available on all three trims. This adds a Class IV hitch as well as a wiring harness and a 4/7 pin connector. With Dynamic Hitch Assist, the rearview camera can help guide the truck to hook up with the trailer. The tow-haul mode adjusts the engine and transmission to accommodate a heavier load.
For years, Ford has been the only truck manufacturer to include trailer coverage with the blind spot monitor. This can watch the tandem vehicle and reduce the chances of changing lanes at the wrong time.
XL and XLT Trim Levels
The XL work truck is the base edition. It comes with Bluetooth connectivity, two interactive screens, and WiFi hotspot capability. Shoppers can add the trailer tow package, Ford CoPilot360, the STX appearance package, or the FX Off-road package.
Ford also allows you to delete the second row in the SuperCab and to add carpet flooring. Some XLT features are also on the XL menu.
The XLT adds the full touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Sync 3 and Ford CoPilot 360 driving assistance. Plus, this value edition has dual-zone automatic climate controls, more audio speakers, satellite radio connectivity, and additional driver assistance technology. Cloth upholstery is upgraded to premium cloth. The exterior gains lightweight alloy wheels and power-folding side mirrors.
Top Trim Levels
Lariat models have leather upholstery and power adjustable front seats. Ambient lighting adds a pleasant glow to travel at night. Drivers appreciate push button start and the Intelligent Access system. The exterior gains more parking aids and LED headlights. Additional parking assistance is added.
The tech package adds navigation, a forward sensing system, and adaptive cruise control. You can also get a remote starter and rain-sensing wipers. The Lariat SuperCrew model is eligible for a Bang & Olufsen upgrade. This adds 10 high performance speakers.
XLTs and Lariats are available with a choice of the FX4 Off-road Package or Tremor Off-road package. Appearance updates include the FX2, Black, Chrome or Sport packages.
Ford Ranger Off Roading
For off-roading, the FX2 package provides off-road OWL tires, an off-road suspension and additional bash plates. An electronic locking rear differential can move traction to the right wheels to improve performance.
The FX4 package adds all of the FX2 improvements and more. With 4WD terrain management, the truck can tackle many different terrains. These two packages are available across the trim levels.
Even with these choices, people who love the Ford F-150 Raptor often ask if there is a Ford Ranger Raptor. Actually Ford created the 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor as an answer to satisfy off-road enthusiasts.
As the most off-road capable, the 2022 Ford Ranger Tremor builds on the four-wheel drive SuperCrew Ranger in either XLT or Lariat trim. The Tremor exterior has red grille accents, skid plates, more tow hooks, and optional exterior graphics. There are special hoop-style side steps that won’t interfere with off-roading.
Fox monotube dampers are used with the revised suspension, allowing for almost an inch extra ground clearance. It adds off-road Fox shocks and beefy 32-inch all-terrain tires. Ford’s 4WD has a 2 speed transfer case and trail control capability. Drivers can enjoy four-wheel drive shift-on-the-fly technology to move seamlessly from 4x4 high and low gears. On the pavement, it reverts to two-wheel drive.
Ford’s Terrain Management adds special modes to help you deal with sand, mud, ruts, gravel, grass, and more. On the dash, a cluster screen shows the driver important stats regarding steering angle, pitch and roll.
Best-in-Class Performance Features
Every 2022 Ford Ranger for sale has an Ecoboost engine that gives it superior fuel economy. Few trucks can compete with its EPA fuel efficiency ratings. Ecoboost engines are so much more efficient that you’ll find an Ecoboost powertrain on the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor. It takes the place of any diesel engine, reducing fuel costs and improving output exponentially.
This class-exclusive twin turbo engine allows the Rangwer to tow up to 7,500 pounds. Output is 270 horsepower and a whopping 310 pound-feet of torque. That torque rate is best in class.
A class-leading 10-speed automatic transmission helps the driver by providing extra torque in the low gears and extra shifts in high gears. The standard rear wheel drive system can be upgraded to one of two four-wheel drive systems.
Like the 2021 Ford Ranger, the 2022 model year includes a stop-start feature. This halts the engine at redlights and easily starts it back as the driver lifts a foot off the brake.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The Ford CoPilot 360 includes a collision warning, a related autobrake, a lane departure warning and assist, and related features. These keep the Ranger driver from situations that might cause a collision. Other features include the rearview camera and the automatic high beams.
The Ranger XLT blind spot monitor further reduces the chances of wandering over the lane lines and hitting a neighboring vehicle. To protect the Ranger when in reverse, the rear cross traffic monitor watches for cars and warns the driver when traffic is coming too close.
Additional safety systems include the adaptive cruise control which combines stop-and-go capability with lane keeping. There is an available sensing system for slow forward and reverse maneuvers.
Ranger Vs Toyota Tacoma
Ford has better payload rating, better towing capacity (5,000 pounds more), much higher horsepower, and incredibly high torque for the money when compared to the Toyota Tacoma. Fuel economy is better for both the city and highway for a combined 23 mpg Ford vs 21 mpg Toyota. Base pricing also favors the Ranger, despite its better specs. Initial savings is approximately $1,500 when choosing the Ford.
Ranger Vs Nissan Frontier
A comparison with the Nissan Frontier tells a similar story. The Ford has a better payload rating and a better towing capacity. While the Frontier edges out the Ranger on horsepower, the Ford turbo edges out the Nissan when it comes to torque. Nissan fuel economy is only 20 mpg vs 23 mpg Ranger. Plus the Ranger’s lower MSRP saves money up front over the Nissan.
Ranger vs Jeep Gladiator
The Jeep Gladiator earns only 16 mpg in the city and has a total mpg of only 19. That’s significantly less than the Ranger. Furthermore, it costs about $10,000 more. These two aspects suggest much higher ownership costs. In addition, the Jeep’s torque rate is 50 lb-ft lower while its horsepower is only 15 higher. Plus, the Ranger has two more gears. With only one size bed, the Gladiator (1150 pounds) cannot haul nearly as much as the Ranger.
Ranger vs Chevy Colorado
The Chevy horsepower is higher than the Ford, but the torque rate is lower. Chevy comes closer to the Ranger’s payload power, but it is short by about 300 pounds. The difference in towing capacity is 7,000 vs 7,500 pounds. Likewise, the Ranger has better fuel economy. It earns 21 mpg vs 18 mpg in the city. The Ford turbo earns 26 vs 25 mpg on the highway.
