2022 Ford Mustang Review
Whether it’s the sexy coupe or the glamorous convertible style, the 2022 Ford Mustang has never been faster or more sure of itself. You can call it a pony car, a muscle car or a sports car, but you will never call it slow.
This year there are more choices than ever. From perfect trims to exciting packages, the menu lets you combine your favorites or seek out a few things a la carte. Colors, styles, and performance choices add to the fun. Keep scrolling to find out what’s new for the model year.
Fastback Performance
Few cars are equipped for action while still claiming good fuel economy. That’s the Mustang Fastback. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine spits out 310 horsepower. The torque rate is a remarkable 350 pound-feet. The racy drivetrain sends the power to the rear wheels.
The standard six-speed manual transmission is tuned to make the most out of the car’s power. These sports cars come with Launch Control and a Reverse Lockout Pull Ring. On the other hand, if you choose the 10-speed automatic transmission, Ford adds a limited slip rear axle.
Most models offer five on-road drive modes. These include track and drag strip as well as normal, sport and snow/wet. The available drag mode adds a line lock, launch control, lap timer, and special Track Apps. Drivers can get stats on braking, acceleration, and launch.
GT Performance
GT and GT Premium models generate 450 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. If that sounds like this car ought to fly, you wouldn’t be too far wrong. Mustang engineers designed the car with just enough downforce to stay on the road. This edition has a large rear ale, larger brake rotors, a special manual transmission and an engine oil cooler.
Both the Mach 1 and the GT Performance package have big Brembo brakes and heavy-duty springs up front. A TORSEN Differential and an upsized rear sway bar add more control for the busy driver. From the chassis to the traction controls, everything has been tuned to match performance.
A Tremec 7-speed dual clutch transmission is mated to the Shelby GT500 engine. This incredible engine creates 760 horsepower and 625 pound feet of torque. The MagneRide damping system is standard.
MACH 1 Performance
The MACH 1 V8 output is 470 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Powertrain calibration has been enhanced for performance. Rev matching is a feature of the TREMEC 6-speed Manual Transmission. MagneRide damping is standard as well.
In addition to a larger radiator, there are coolers for the engine oil, transmission, and differential to protect vital components. If taken to the track, it may hit its top speed of 168 miles per hour.
The pony car is designed to be assisted, not dragged down, by airflow. There is an Open Air Induction System and a unique intake manifold.
Exterior Colors and Special Packages
The Mustang exterior colors have changed since last year. There are Metallics in Atlas Blue, Cyber Orange Tri-Coat, Dark Matter Gray, and Grabber Blue. Exciting picks include Eruption Green Metallic and Mischievous Purple Metallic.
Like the 2021 Ford Mustang for sale, stripes are offered in Ebony-and-white and Ebony-and-orange. New color accents include a special white side stripe and a cool black-and-red side strip.
A new Ice White Package combines Oxford White paint with white exterior accents. Both this package and the Stealth Package add a performance rear wing. However, the 2022 Stealth goes a more mysterious direction with its black grille, black-painted alloy wheels, and other black accents.
The new Coastal Limited Package adds a pedestal rear spoiler and side scoops. The unique grille is painted the body color, and a special vinyl stripe is added to the body. The California Special Package returns with a new stripe color and other exterior accents.
Trim Level Exteriors
Up front, hood vents are among the details that give the Mustang its immediate curb appeal. In back, the dual bright exhaust pipes have rolled tips. The Premium edition adds a blade decklid spoiler. Its exterior mirrors also gain a welcoming puddle lamp that shines the Mustang pony on the ground.
For the GT, Ford has raised the blade decklid spoiler. They’ve added a special rear valance and quad exhaust tips. Up front, there’s a high gloss black grille and LED fog lights. The Black Accent Package adds a black roof for contrast.
The Ford Mustang Mach 1 has a performance rear spoiler, a hood accent stripe, black-painted brake calipers, and a side stripe. Even without those, you’d notice the difference in its upper, lower, and outboard grilles as well as the unique front and rear lower fascia.
Ready for the track, the GT500 Track Package has a carbon fiber GT4 track wing with adjustable strut top mounts. It also has exposed carbon fiber wheels and special splitter wickers.
Fastback Trim Levels
The 2022 Mustang interior is high tech and sporty. Standards start off with push button start, a Sync 4.2 inch screen, AppLink, and many driver assistance technologies. The instrument panel wears a special carbon zag finish.
Premium trim levels dress up with special speaker surround, satin details, illuminated sills, and ambient MyColor lighting. Active X covers the seats, including the new power chair for the front passenger. Drivers will enjoy their own, more advanced power chair and aluminum foot pedals.
A 9-speaker stereo and an 8-inch touchscreen provide more infotainment. Everyone can cool off faster with the dual zone automatic climate system. Toggle switches are added to make selecting a drive mode faster.
Ford Mustang Convertibles are offered in regular, Premium and GT Premium editions. Active noise cancellation is an additional standard.
Upper Trim Levels
If you go for the Ford Mustang GT, you’ll find that it has dual power chairs like the Premium. It has cloth seats, a leather steering wheel, and a special Silver Arrow finish for its instrument panel.
The Ford Mustang GT Premium features match the Fastback Premium. This includes ventilated front seats to take the bite out of hot summer days. The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is an even dressier edition.
The Mach 1 cabin exudes a premium atmosphere. Every element seems richer or sportier. Style aspects include a bright door speaker surround, accent-stitched premium mats, a Dark Spindrift dash accent, and illuminated door sills.
Behind the Mach 1 steering wheel, Ford places its excellent 12-inch LCD Digital Instrument Cluster. Another sporty touch is a white cue ball shift knob.
Interior Color Choices
Cloth or Active X is offered in ebony or dark ceramic. Premium leathers add a third choice in tan. The Ice White Package adds a unique white interior. Highlights include white leather seats and white door trim panels.
The Premier Trim with Color Accent can be applied to the Ecoboost Premium or the GT Premium. This adds a Showstopper Red leather to the menu. You may prefer Ebony with a metal gray stitch or a rich midnight blue with a Grabber Blue stitch.
Leathers include ebony-and-dove or ebony-and-metal gray. The appearance packages let you choose an orange accent for the ebony seats.
Technology
With the 8-inch touch screen system, drivers enjoy the benefits of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as Sync apps. The 9-speaker system can be upgraded to the Bang and Olufsen premium system with 12 speakers.
When available, a 12-inch screen is tucked behind the steering wheel. This LCD digital instrumentation has MyColor to allow for more personalization. The touch screen can be updated with pinch-to-zoom capability and a navigation system.
Track Apps keep you informed about performance metrics. This includes lateral and longitudinal g-forces, lap times, countdown starts, and acceleration times.
Safety
While it’s all about having fun on the road, the Mustang doesn’t give an inch when it comes to safety. From its knee airbag to its Ford Co-Pilot360 technology, this pony car works to help the driver and keep everyone out of harm’s way.
There are so many standard and available systems. To watch the sides, there is a lane keeping assist, lane keeping alert, a blind spot alert, and a rear cross-traffic alert. The forward collision warning watches for traffic slow-downs and pedestrians. It may trigger automatic emergency braking and/or can offer dynamic brake support to the driver. At night, there are auto high beams.
While no Mustang driver wants to give up control, it’s still nice to have the available adaptive cruise control. It can slow and go with traffic patterns, reducing driver stress during a busy commute.
