New Ford F-150 Review | F150 Trim Levels in Detail
The 2022 Ford F-150 is a completely modern ride with integrated technologies throughout its systems. Yet it is still the same truck that it has always been.
Built tough, it retains the class-leading and towing capabilities that people expect from this popular truck. Shoppers can trust that there isn’t a bad choice in its engine lineup. There’s even a Hybrid choice and the all-new Lightning electric truck.
The truck appeals to hard workers by offering ways to work smarter and do more in less time. Examples include the available Interior Work Surface and the Pro Power Onboard system, an integrated power generator.
Perhaps most important to Phoenix drivers, the F-150 has been tortured-tested in temperatures as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This is one truck you can trust even when the desert heat is scorching.
Ford F150 Price and Value
It is priced lower than other full size pickups, making it available to more people (Source: U.S. News and World Report). Plus, the regular cab remains part of the lineup, ensuring the ultimate work truck is available for less. Basically this truck has more price points overall, allowing more people to find one that has what they needs at the right price.
Maintenance costs can be defrayed with the FordPass system. Plus the aluminum build has a resistance to rust and is less likely to get dents and dings.
According to the number one name in automotive appraisals, the Ford F150 has the lowest cost to own. The 2021 model earned the 5-Year-Cost -To-Own Award from Kelley Blue Book.
The Ecoboost engines provide more power while requiring less fuel. They operate on regular unleaded gasoline, too, keeping costs down.
New aerodynamic features make this efficient truck even more fuel efficient. When equipped, a stop-start system reduces gas use during long idles.
One last note about value, this great truck enjoys a higher resale value due to its popularity and durability.
Performance by Trim Level
With its 10-speed automatic transmission, the Ford F 150 promises to do more with any engine choice. Rear wheel drive is standard. Available across the trim lineup, four wheel drive is standard on the Tremor and Raptor.
The most popular engine is the twin-turbo Ecoboost V6. This Lariat standard generates 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The XL and XLT also offer this powertrain. The entry level models have a 3.3-liter V6 that generates 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The King Ranch and Platinum models have a powerful 5-liter V8. This engine delivers 400 horses and 410 lb-ft. It’s available on the Lariat, XL and XLT.
Limited and Tremor models have an exciting twin-turbo. This Ecoboost V6 creates 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. It is available for all five lower trims.
The Raptor has a high-output Ecoboost engine that kicks out 450 horses and 510 lb-ft. The Hybrid F-150 is available on all trims except the Raptor. It adds an electric motor to the Ecoboost twin-turbo V6. This generates 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque.
Towing Capability, Payload Capacity and Bed Specifications
The F150 has a top towing capacity of 14,000 pounds with the available 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6. That beats the Ram 1500 and all other full-size light duty trucks.
The V8 offers best-in-class payload capability of 3,235 pounds.
To get the 8-foot bed, the shopper must choose certain trim levels and either the regular or Super Cab. The 6.5-foot bed comes with all three cabin choices. The SuperCrew cab is always paired with the 5-5-foot bed.
With 21.4-in bed depth, the small bed offers 52.8 cubic feet with 67.1 inches of usable length. The bigger beds measure 62.3 cu ft and 77.4 cu ft with lengths of 78.9 or 97.6 inches.
Basic Interior Trim Levels
The durable Ford F-150 XL is ready to work hard. Still, it has a full touch screen system with the infotainment features everyone wants in a vehicle these days. This includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as an available Wi-Fi hotspot.
XLT models have power windows, alloy wheels, fog lights, and a longer list of tech standards. These include lane keeping and blind spot monitoring. Parking should be easier with the rear cross traffic alert and parking sensors.
Ford F-150 Lariat models really pile on the amenities. Leather upholstery, a digital gauge cluster, and the largest touch screen upgrade the interior. The front seats are power-adjustable, power-heated and power-ventilated. The dash has push button start and dual-zone automatic temperature controls.
Luxury Trim Levels: King Ranch, Platinum, Limited
The King Ranch and Platinum trims have a Super Crew cab and a choice of the 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot bed. King Ranch models are known for their unique leather upholstery. This year the color is Java, and genuine wood accents are used for the trim.
These F150s have the 8-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system and more dash tech, including the navigation system and HD Radio. The steering wheel and rear seats pick up power-heat functions. There is much more driver assistance including adaptive cruise control on the Ford F 15- for sale.
The ritzy Platinum wears a distinctive upholstery in a Carmelo color scheme. It has Ford’s multicontour massaging front seats. Another favorite feature is its power-deployable running boards.
The Limited leather seating comes in Admiral Blue and Light Slate. It has massaging seats and an 18-speaker B&O audio system with front headrest speakers. The power tailgate has a deployable step.
Parking is easier with a parallel and perpendicular automatic assist and a surround-view camera system. Trailering is easier with Ford’s reverse guidance and backup assist features. Like the Tremor and Raptor, this trim level only comes with the SuperCrew and the 5.5-foot bed.
Off-roading Trims: FX4 Package, Tremor, Raptor
Every F150 can be an off-roader. From the XL to the Platinum, the FX4 Off-Road package is an affordable way to turn your truck into a trailblazer. FX4 models have an electronic-locking rear differential and off-road shock absorbers. There’s more refinement with Hill Descent Control and more protection with multiple skid plates.
Offering even more capability, the 2022 Ford F-150 Tremor stands taller and strikes a wider stance. It has 33-inch all-terrain tires, upgraded suspension features, and monotube front and twin-tube rear shocks.
The remarkable Raptor is still the top off-roader. It is equipped with 34-inch tires and Fox racing shocks. It has heavy duty skid plates for extra protection. All of Ford’s cool trail features are on this model.
Trail Control is cruise control for very low speeds. Trail Turn Assist allows for individual wheel turning when trying to navigate a tight turn. Trail 1-Pedal Drive allows drivers to use one pedal as the brake and accelerator for slow speed driving.
If the Raptor still isn’t as rough and ready as you want, you can add a front Torsen differential and upgrade to 37-inch all-terrain tires.
Other Ford F150 Styles
The STX Black Appearance Package utilizes the color black in multiple ways to achieve a blacked out interior. It has special sport-cloth seats and other sport-oriented extras. Shoppers can also choose Black Appearance Packages specific to the XLT, Lariat or Platinum editions.
Coming soon, the F-150 Rattler wears rugged all-terrain tires. It has a fender vent, blacked-out grille, blacked out bumpers, and unique Rattler badging and box decal. The dual exhaust and sport-tuned suspension add to its ability to play hard. The cabin wears a signature bronze color that further sets the Rattler apart from other trucks.
Towing Technologies and Packages
If the truck you choose isn’t outfitted with everything you want for trailering, it’s easy to get more. There are towing packages available across the lineup that can get you what you want.
Ford was the first to offer blind spot monitoring for your trailer, and this feature is still not offered on more than one other brand of truck. The newest systems are the Smart Hitch for faster hookups and on-board scales to keep track of your payload weight.
Another exclusive technology, trailer backup assist only takes a dial to move the trailer in one direction while moving the truck backwards. Hooking up is easier with the dynamic hitch assist.
On the road, a trailer brake controller and standard trailer sway control make the driver safer.
The smart trailer connector keeps tabs on the trailer and reports to the driver via a tow activity screen. Parking and slow maneuvers become simpler and safer with the surround-view parking camera system.
A Max package can add an electronic-locking rear axle and an upgraded rear bumper. A heavy duty package adds a locking rear axle, revised gearing, and upgraded springs. Also available, continuously controlled damping can reduce the stress on your truck and make hauling safer.
Dash Tech, Safety, and Driver Assistance
The 12-inch touchscreen has a split-screen capability, allowing you to track navigation while also keeping up with the playlist. An in-vehicle Wi-Fi subscription allows you to get coverage for your smart devices within 50 feet of the 2022 Ford F 150.
This Ford full-size truck can claim a 5/5 rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It earns a superior from the Institute of Highway Safety for its forward-facing crash prevention systems.
Safety features include a standard forward collision warning with pedestrian detection capability. This system can trigger an automatic emergency braking system in certain situations.
The advanced systems include an evasive steering assist, reverse automatic braking, and traffic sign recognition. Active Drive Assist lets you use lane centering technology with the adaptive cruise control for semi-automated driving.
