New Ford Bronco Sport Review | Off-road Compact SUV
The 2022 Ford Bronco Sport represents the second year of one of the newest Ford SUVs. It has been a huge hit. It’s hard to tell whether this is due to its fun looks or its adventure capabilities. It could also be due to its technologies.
While a totally different model than the Bronco, the smaller ute does share some major similarities. Namely, it has the Go Over Any Terrain (GOAT) driving modes and the ability to take to the trail. Calling it a versatile compact ute, Car and Driver named the 2022 Bronco Sport to its Editors’ Choice list.
Here’s what you should know if you are considering the Bronco Sport. Remember a test drive is essential to any car buying decision. In this case, it also happens to be fun.
Performance
Owners will appreciate the clever 1.5-liter Ecoboost powertrain on the Ford Bronco Sport for sale. This engine is mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission. This wide gear spread helps make the most of the system’s 181 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. To reduce fuel waste, it has a start-stop system for redlights.
For more power, there’s a 2-liter four-cylinder engine. This Ecoboost turbo spits out 245 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Ford upgrades the cooling components to ensure better operation. It also adds paddle shifters for a bit more driver fun.
Standard Off-Road Capability
Every Bronco Sport has a four wheel drive system. The use of electronic all-wheel technology is the lightweight, modern way to go off-roading. It also has five GOAT modes (or more) and a HOSS suspension. Edmunds calls it “genuinely fun to drive when the pavement ends.”
The standard GOAT modes include normal, eco, sport, slippery and sand. Several shoppers have noted that Phoenix drivers get a real deal with this because the sand mode is the one we are most likely to encounter.
Advanced Off-Roading Skills
Adding two more GOAT modes, the Badlands has Mud-Ruts and Rock Crawl. It also has an off-road suspension and Ford Trail Control. This type of cruise control is used at a very low speed for off-roading. It has quite a range since you can use it at speeds up to 20 mph or you can use it in reverse at speeds up to 6 mph.
The more advanced 4x4 system utilizes a twin-clutch rear-drive unit. A differential lock can redirect all rear torque to either rear wheel. With big off-road tires, ground clearance is 8.8 inches. It may ford up to 23.6 inches of water.
Car and Driver notes that this edition can go head to head with the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Edmunds writes that the capable Bronco Sport is the Trailhawk’s rival, and it can do more for less money.
Cargo Space, Tow Ratings and Overall Utility
This SUV was designed to be useful. Among its available features, you’ll find under-seat storage and a cargo management system. You can get rear floodlights, built-in power outlets, a 400-watt power inverter, a slide-out table, and other helpful tools.
The cargo area lets you pack up to 65.2 cubic feet with the seats folded. That can even fit up to two bikes into the area. It has a tall ceiling for its whole length due to its high, flat Safari roof.
A flip-glass rear window gives you two choices when you need to reach your gear. The load floor is low for easy access. Plus, the flat-fold back row can split to allow for a combination of seating and cargo space.
The small SUV can tow up to 2,200 pounds when equipped properly. Plus, if you get a roof rack, it can handle up to 150 pounds.
Trim Levels
The Ford Bronco Sport interior is made to match its fun exterior. Adjustable bucket seats and a driver-centric cockpit are standards. The entry-level trim comes packed with Ford CoPilot technologies and advanced Sync dash technologies.
The Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend is designed to handle dirt. So it has easy-to-clean fabric on the seats. It also has a rubberized cargo floor. There are even available rear-seat back protectors.
Other Big Bend extras include attractive silver mountain air vents, rear air ducts, and automatic temperature controls. This trim also adds MOLLE straps and heated side mirrors.
With its leather-clad cabin, the Outer Banks edition piles on the amenities. The seats are upgraded to Sport Contour Bucket chairs with an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat. A larger digital instrument panel screen and ambient lighting elevate the cabin’s style. The exterior dresses up with a Shadow Black roof, Ebony black wheels, and a bolder grille in black with white badging.
The Badlands trim wears all-terrain tires, metal bash plates, and carbonized gray wheels. This trim is equipped for more trail adventure. There are special adventure bundles. New this year, you can get a Dog bundle as well as Off-road, Bike, Camping, Water and other categories.
Technology Standards and Options
The 8-inch touch screen is an advanced capacitive model. It has swipe capability and is voice activated. AppLink could do the job alone, but you also have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This lets you send apps to your screen where you can utilize them for entertainment or navigation.
The advanced touchscreen adds pinch-to-zoom capability. You also get voice-enabled navigation. 911 Assist is available. Plus, with FordPass Connect, the SUV can turn into a Wi-Fi-hotspot.
You can also add a Bang & Olufsen system with 10 speakers. This package includes a wireless charger and HD radio. The premium package adds two-tone leather seats, a 6-way power chair for the front seat passenger, the B&O system, and other amenities.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
Like the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, the new model has earned the five-star safety rating after the NHTSA crash tests. Parking is simple with the standard rearview camera and the standard rear cross traffic alert. Some models also have rear parking sensors.
Shoppers are always relieved to hear that much of Ford CoPilot360 technology is standard on the entry level Bronco Sport. This includes the systems that watch the sides, including the lane keeper and the blind spot monitor. It also includes the automatic emergency braking with the pre-collision assist system.
Shoppers may add adaptive cruise control. This advanced system utilizes stop-and-go tech, lane centering, and speed limit sign recognition. Exterior driver aids include the standard auto high-beam headlamps and available rain-sensing wipers.
The Badlands edition adds a front 180-degree camera system. Drivers can utilize it as part of a split view with the reverse camera or navigation. It also has a washer since it is destined to see some use on the trailer.
Bronco Sport vs Bronco
Here’s what you need to know about the two models’ differences. Broncos have more GOAT modes, more ground clearance, and overall tougher builds. That’s why they can claim more off-road road prowess.
For instance, the Bronco is a body-on-frame SUV while the Bronco Sport utilizes the standard on-road frame of the Ford Escape. However, as Car and Driver notes, this smaller ute does a good job of mixing urban living with outdoorsy weekend adventures.
The Bronco style, which includes a removable roof, is distinctive. However, the Safari-style roof on the Bronco Sport certainly “attracts attention” (Car and Driver). Edmunds calls it a very distinctive SUV and praises its rugged styling.
So, you can call this ride a Baby Bronco. You wouldn’t be too far off-base. Like the Bronco, it is an overall good SUV that delivers off-road capability, has fun features, and looks sporty just standing still.
