New Ford Bronco Review | Ford Off-Road SUV Explained
If you want a good off-road SUV, you can now look to Ford for the leader of the pack. The 2022 Ford Bronco is a big hit. This SUV blends style and technology with the best Ford off-roading equipment available today.
Two-door and four-door styles make this off-road SUV appealing to more types of adventure shoppers. If you are looking for the best models and trims of the Ford Bronco for sale, this review is for you. Scrolling down, you’ll find the details that should inform your car-buying decisions.
Bronco Colors and Exterior
In model years, the Bronco is only two years old. Yet it clearly knows how to make off-roaders happy. The top and frameless doors are removable for open air driving. High ground clearance and tightly-fitted bumpers keep vital equipment above the brush.
The Bronco colors cover the rainbow, offering up options for every personality. New this year, shoppers can choose Code Orange, Eruption Green Metallic, or a Hot Pepper Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat.
The Desert Sand color is now available on the Everglades trim level. Other fun colors include Velocity Blue, Area 51, Race Red, and Cyber Orange. The removable roofs come in a black soft top or a gray molded-in-color Hard Top on this off-road SUV.
Interior Colors and Style
A high-tech sport interior greets its passengers with comfort and style. Starting on the base trim level, the dash includes push button start, an electric parking brake, and a full touch screen system.
Black Onyx is the standard upholstery color, but there are many other choices. Dark space gray is combined with Navy Pier. Other Ford Bronco 2022 combinations include Medium Sandstone, Dark Space Gray, or Roast with Black Onyx for contrast. The Bronco Raptor interior is blue with black onyx.
Upholstery options include cloth, vinyl and a leather-trimmed vinyl combination upholstery. Color detailing includes fun stuff like Code Orange accent seat belts.
Trim Levels
The base edition can be upgraded to the Big Bend, Black Diamond, Everglades, Outer Banks, Badlands, and Wildtrak. Certain trims have special rubberized flooring with drain plugs for easy washout. There’s also the new Bronco Raptor, which has most technologies and top amenities as standard features.
The lower trims can be equipped with the mid package. This includes dual-zone automatic climate controls, ambient footwell lighting, and heated front seats. It also adds additional CoPilot 360 technology.
The Outer Banks and higher trims have the mid package as standard. They also offer the High Package which adds the bigger touchscreen, a 360-degree camera system, and even more driver assistance features.
The Lux package adds adaptive cruise control, a 10-speaker audio system, evasive steering assist, more USB ports, a heated steering wheel and a wireless charger.
Performance
Only Ford could bring you so much power in the form of a fuel-efficient Ecoboost I-4. The engine generates 275 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque. Premium fuel boosts output to 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.
Active grille shutters help ensure aerodynamic travel and better fuel efficiency. Automatic start-stop, which is used at the driver’s discretion, can save fuel at every red light.
The 2.7L Ecoboost V6 generates 315 or 330 horsepower with regular or premium fuel. The torque rate is a whopping 410 or 415 pound-feet of torque.
This is the first year for the Raptor’s 3-liter Ecoboost V6 powertrain. It generates even more horsepower and torque for the ultimate Bronco experience.
Capability
With the 7-speed manual transmission, hill descent control is standard. The 10-speed automatic transmission includes Trail Turn Assist and Trail Control. Stepping up to the 2.7-liter V6 with the automatic, the driver also gets Trail One-Pedal Drive.
All Broncos are 4x4 SUVs, but there are two 4x4 versions. When you choose the advanced 4x4 drivetrain, Ford adds the Sasquatch package. This includes high clearance fender flares and high clearance suspension with position-sensitive Bilstein shock absorbers.
.
GOAT, which stands for goes-over-any-terrain, travel modes include a sand mode, perfect for our desert landscape. With the Big Bend trim level, the special mud-and-ruts mode is added. With the Black Diamond trim level, the GOAT menu adds the Rock Crawl mode. This trim adds steel bash plates and rock rails.
With the Badlands, you have the Baja mode, another Ford exclusive. It also has a front stabilizer-bar disconnect that sharpens wheel articulation.
Utility, Size and Specifications
This midsize SUV comes in either two-door or four-door configurations. Two-door passenger volume is 99 cubic feet, and cargo space is 22.6 cubic feet.
Four-door Broncos offer 103.7 cubic feet of passenger space. The hardtop four-row has 35.6 cubic feet of cargo space while the soft top four-door offers 38.3 cubic feet.
The standard build includes an Dana AdvanTek independent front suspension and a Dana 44 Advantek rear suspension with a rear differential. Tires range from 30 inches to 35 inches.
Ground clearance is 8.3 or 8.4 inches. At the top end, it is 11.6 or 11.7 inches. Models with the Sasquatch package can ford up to 33.5 inches. The Everglades trim level pushes that to 36.4 inches.
Offered only as a four-door, the 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor has a running ground clearance of 13.1 inches and can ford up to 37 inches. The suspension is upgraded to a Dana 44 front and Dana 50 heavy-duty rear setup.
Technology for Entertainment and Adventure
The 8-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen is an advanced system that includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 4G LTE Wi-Fi is available on all models and can be used on up to 10 devices. The 12-inch touchscreen offers connected, built-in navigation.
The trail is easier to navigate with a 360-degree camera system. Another boon for off-roading is the FordPass Performance. It uses navigational aids to assist the driver.
Safety
Ford CoPilot 360 technology is available across the lineup. Always standard, the pre-collision assist with an emergency autobrake and dynamic brake support are tied to the forward collision warning and pedestrian watch. Additional driver assistance standards include the auto high beams and the rearview camera.
The Mid Package adds the systems that watch the sides of the SUV. This includes the blind spot information system, the rear cross traffic alert, the lane keeping alert, and lane keeping assist. The ultimate driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist.
Ford Bronco vs 2022 Jeep Wrangler
There are many comparisons to be made to the Jeep Wrangler. The fact is that JD Power, the Car Connection and other reviewers are giving the Bronco more points for its interior style. The four-door Broncos also excel at cargo storage with as much as 7 cubic feet of extra room.
In terms of basic engine output, the Wrangler’s base engine generates 10 more horsepower, but it really misses out when it comes to torque. The Ford Ecoboost engine generates 325 pound-feet, which is quite superior to the Wrangler’s 260 pound-feet.
There are more Bronco trim levels and more Bronco choices overall. Furthermore, the Bronco’s pricing starts out close to the base Wrangler. However, the top Bronco trim level is almost $8,000 less than the top Wrangler.
One-Pedal Trail Assist is a Ford exclusive that truly makes the Bronco unique. You can use one pedal to drive or break at very low speeds. This takes a lot of stress off of the driver, allowing them to just enjoy the trail.
Bronco vs Bronco Sport
The 2022 Bronco Sport is a smaller SUV with sporty styling. It earns the right to share the name with the big Bronco by offering GOAT terrain management. The smaller SUV has good equipment to go off-road, and it has lower price points to reach more consumers.
Although the Bronco is the bigger adventure machine, the Bronco Sport is still an off-roading contender. Perhaps you need to take a test drive of both to discover which one is right for you.
