Surprise

Surprise AZ at a Glance

The city of Surprise has been growing rapidly since 2000. It jumped from 30,000 to 117,517 between the 2000 and 2010 Census. It grew more slowly, but it added another 26,000 by the 2020 Census.

What’s driving its growth? Surprise has always been influenced by the growth of Phoenix. However, it was a trickle-down effect that didn’t spur much change until Sun City Grand was built, starting in 1996. This brought more development and more focus on the area.

By the time Sun City Grand was finished in 2005, more developers were discovering Surprise. The original founder Flora Mae Statler would never recognize the area which has changed so much. The original 1 square mile plot has grown to 110 square miles.

Surprise residents tend to commute to jobs in the surrounding area and as far as Phoenix. The average time in the car is 30.7 minutes each way.

That’s where Surprise AZ Ford dealerships come into the picture. Rodeo Ford offers the incredible benefits of the Ford lineup. You’ll find the latest technologies and nicest amenities on our SUVs and trucks. Surprise Ford drivers can take advantage of the latest driver assistance and dash technologies available in automotives today.

Surprise Activities and Opportunities

With so much sunshine, outdoor opportunities are everywhere. In fact, Surprise has six golf courses before you count the four in the Sun City Grand community. That’s ten different courses to challenge golfers. Of course, there are even more golf courses in the Phoenix metro area.

The city built a large Tennis and Racquet Complex to satisfy residents who want to play tennis, racquetball or pickleball. The 2,500-person arena allows them to host tournaments as well.

Another favorite is lawn bowling. There are four greens in Sun City Grand, and these have attracted national tournaments.

Nature watching and bird watching are also common activities. A certified Audubon sanctuary is part of the Quail Run Golf Course, and the Lakeside Pavilion at Sun City Grand offers excellent birding opportunities.

Birders may head out to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, the Hassayampa River Preserve or the Tres Rios Wetlands. The Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert is a favorite for its diversity. More than 300 different species have been spotted there.

Another favorite in Surprise is the Cactus League. Spring training with the Kansas City Royals or Texas Rangers is fun to watch. Even more fun, the two teams line up against 13 other teams for games in March and early April. Surprise Stadium is the closest of ten stadiums throughout the Phoenix metro area.
