Ford Super Duty Review | Ford Heavy Duty F250, F350, F450
There are many heavy duty trucks, but the only Super Duty Trucks are at Ford dealers. From the Ford F 250 Super Duty to the muscular F350 and F450, these trucks remain the best in their class in so many ways.
Shoppers will notice top payload ratings, top tow ratings, exclusive towing technology, exclusive safety technologies, and much more. The Super Duty body is made with military-grade aluminum. Therefore, these trucks are stronger, more durable, more dent-and-ding resistant, lighter weight, and not subject to rust.
For those who want to save, there are value editions at the XL and XLT level. For those who want luxury, the top three trims really pile it on. Slotted in the middle, the Lariat offers a more luxurious trim at a more budget-friendly truck price.
Keep scrolling to get the details on the Super Duty Ford F-250 F-350 and F-450 choices. Talk to our staff or take a test drive to learn more.
Performance: How Much Power Do You Need?
Standard on the F-450, the 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel generates 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. With so much torque, this engine is unbeatable on the jobsite or when pulling a heavy trailer.
The medium duty F250 and heavy duty F350 can also come equipped with the turbo diesel. The standard gasoline V8 engine generates 385 horsepower and a hefty 430 lb-ft of torque. The 7.3-liter PFI V8 spits out 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft. Clearly all of these trucks are made to move the heaviest loads.
Towing Capability
With the top two engines, a 10-speed TorqShift® transmission is standard. This provides more grunt at low speeds and better shifts to capture power at high speeds. Rear-wheel drive is standard with four-wheel drive as an option on most models.
With the F450 or a dual-rear-wheel F-350, turbodiesel editions can tow 37,000 pounds via a gooseneck hitch. SWD F350s and F250s can tow up to 22,000 pounds when similarly equipped.
Otherwise, the Ford F250 Super Duty truck can tow 12,300 to 15,000 pounds depending on the engine and configuration. The SRW F-350 edges that up to a maximum of 16,700 with the top gas V8. When similarly equipped, the DRW F-350 is rated from 16,200 to 21,000 pounds. The trailer tow package is needed to ensure that these models can meet their maximum towing capacity.
Cargo Bed Specifications and Payload Ratings
Regular cabs come with the large 8-foot bed. It measures 78.5 cubic feet and has a usable length of 98.1 inches. Minimum and maximum bed widths are 50.5 and 66.9 inches.
With so many configurations, there are many variations, but here are some examples of this series’ outstanding payload ratings: 4,260 lbs (F250 4x2); 4,260 lbs (F350 SWD); 6210 lbs (F450 4x2); and 7200 lbs (F350 DWD).
The SuperCab and CrewCab can be combined with the bigger bed or the 6.75-foot bed. It is rated at 65.4 cubic feet. Usable length is 81.9 inches. The F350 SWD 4x4 boasts the highest payload ratings: Supercab (4,610 lbs) and CrewCab (4460 lbs).
Cargo bed specs and payload capacity numbers can be confusing. Our knowledgeable staff can help you find the right truck with the best specs for your needs.
Cabin Sizes and Interior Trim Levels
The F-450 is offered in the regular or Crew cab while the F250 and F350 also offer the SuperCab. The three cab sizes are offered on both the XL and XLT trims. The Lariat offers the SuperCab and CrewCab. The popular King Ranch, the luxurious Platinum, and the top-of-the-line Limited always have the CrewCab.
The two larger cabs have a 3/3 layout, seating six if needed. The front bench can be traded for bucket chairs with a center-console bin.
SuperCabs have the same shoulder, head, and hip room as the Crew cabs. However it has less legroom and less cargo space.
In the Crew cab, rear legroom is 43.6 inches, and cargo space is rated at 52.1 cu ft.
Plus, the rear seats gain an armrest with cupholders and a hidden lockable storage box. Since it is the only cab offered on the top trims, this is the cabin choice for those who are looking for the most luxurious amenities.
All cabins have an ergonomic cockpit and a practical layout. A sharp dash design, dash technologies, and other fashionable touches make the truck look as modern on the inside as it is under the hood.
The work truck, known as the XL trim, has medium earth gray seats in vinyl or cloth. These are coordinated with a cloth headliner. Technology includes dual screens, a rearview camera, and available Wi-Fi.
Super Duty XLT
The Ford F250 Super Duty XLT is recognizable by its two-bar bright chrome grille and chrome bumpers. The wheels are 18-inch sparkle silver painted aluminum with bright hub covers and center ornaments. You can also dress up the XLT with the chrome-rich Premium package or the aggressive Black Appearance Package.
The high-strength Super Duty bed has four BoxLink premium locking cleats. Drivers will appreciate the telescoping, folding trailer tow mirrors. These have power-heated glass to allow for quick defrosting as does the convex spotter mirror.
The interior has high-series cloth seats and matching carpeting. The split bench has two seats with a center console and under-seat storage. The XLT trim also adds a 4.2-inch productivity screen, SiriusXM connectivity, additional 110V/400W outlets, and additional power-lock equipment for security and convenience.
Most importantly, the XLT has all of Ford key technologies including BLIS, Pre-collision assistance, automatic emergency braking, and a forward collision warning. Plus it has a trailer brake controller and the Smart Trailer Tow Connector. The F-250 also has Sync3, which means you have a 8-inch touchscreen with pinch-to-zoom, swipe and the voice command capability that comes with Sync, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
With the upgrade, the Super Duty XLT driver gets an eight-power driver's seat. Locking is easier with automatic locking and unlocking capability plus the SecuriCode keypad. The reverse sensing system reduces the chances of a fender bender in the parking lot.
The F-250 XLT is eligible for more trailer tow equipment and technology, too. This includes the Ford trailer tow camera system and the exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature. The Super Duty XLT already has power-heated towing mirrors, power-heated side mirrors, trailer sway control, and hill start assist. That's a nice list of equipment for someone with loads to haul every day.
Super Duty Lariat
The Lariat exterior is recognizable by standards such as its fog lamps, angular chrome step bar, additional chrome inserts on the grille, and 18-inch bright machined cast wheels. Plus, to make towing easier, this trim level has an integrated trailer brake controller and standard trailer hitch receivers.
The Lariat interior features micro-perforated leather and a Baja color scheme with tarnished metal appliques. Ready to please the driver, this truck has power-adjustable pedals and a ten-way power chair. The front passenger's chair is 8-way power adjustable.
The 4-inch productivity screen is updated to an 8-inch LCD screen. This trip computer includes important towing and off-road applications. The audio system is upgraded to a 10-speaker B&O system with a subwoofer.
There’s lots of convenience in this model, too. The rear window gains power-slide capability. The side trailer mirrors become auto folding and PowerScope telescoping. Ford adds its SecuriCode keypad for truly keyless entry. Parking aids include a reverse sensing system .
Super Duty King Ranch, Platinum and Limited Trim Levels
If you want even more leather and style, you can step up to the King Ranch, Platinum or Limited trim levels. Shoppers can expect more amenities and a higher quality level of craftsmanship as they step into luxury truck territory.
Always a favorite, the Super Duty King Ranch has an upscale look with the high quality materials you’d find on a luxury car. Kingsville antique-effect leather is matched with wood grain appliques and unique panels. Ventilated front seats keep you cooler during Phoenix summers.
Platinum models wear a dark marsala interior. Micro-perforated leather covers multicontour seats. The Limited is dressed in a combination of Admiral Blue and Light Slate. Detailing includes Dark Ash wood, smoked brushed aluminum, and a Miko suede headliner.
Off-roading Packages and the Super Duty Tremor
On the XLT, the FX4 Off-Road package is ready to protect the Super Duty truck from potential problems on the trail. The shocks are specially tuned, and there are skid plates on the transfer case and fuel tank. The four-wheel drivetrain is complemented by terrain management and Hill Descent Control.
For off-roading, the Tremor is an off-road package available on the F-250 and F-350 top trims. It has 35-inch wheels and all the trail-riding equipment you could need. It turns these hard-workers into great adventure rides. Ford includes trail control and rock crawl modes.
The Super Duty Tremor can ford water up to 33 inches. A Forbes reviewer, who test drove the F-250 Tremor, wrote that it was one of the most capable off-road trucks he’d seen. He noted the 35-inch tires had “unbelievable traction” and praised the multiple off-road modes on the Trail Control system.
When it's not going off road, it can pull 15,000 pounds or haul 4,210 pounds. Car and Driver noted that their F-250 Tremor edition with 475 lb-ft of torque could run the sprint in 7.5 seconds.
Dashboard and Safety Technology
The Sync system puts an 8-inch or 12-inch touchscreen on the dash. It includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The FordPass Connect app acts as a remote starter and allows you to check fuel levels, mileage and more.
The available Wi-Fi system lets you connect your smart devices. This should give you coverage at many remote worksites or campsites. It’s essential for those who work out of their trucks!
Ford has numerous towing technologies to assist with parking, hooking up the trailer, staying safe on the highway and more. The brand’s blind spot monitor can watch a trailer up to 33 feet in length.
CoPilot 360 technology includes automatic braking and much more. Adaptive Cruise Control can regulate the speed, giving the driver less stress. From lane keeping to blind spot monitoring, these trucks are offering every system that Ford has created to assist the driver.
