2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Lightning | Electric Ford Truck Gains Momentum
The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning is gaining momentum. It’s on track to deliver 150,000 electric trucks per year. This is particularly significant since it has only been in production for 1.5 years.
It earned the 2023 Motor Trend Truck of the Year. That’s probably the most prestigious award it could have taken home. In fact, that’s an award that requires top performance which clearly this EV is delivering.
What is this electric truck’s place in the EV marketplace? Is it a good fit for you? Here’s what you need to know about the new model year.
What is the Lightning Electric Range and Horsepower?
There are two battery sizes. The standard battery can promise 240 miles of electric range while the extended battery promises 320 miles. The Platinum driving range is 300 miles. These numbers are subject to change as the year progresses so check in with our staff to find out if the driving range has increased.
Standard horsepower is an ample 452 horses while the extended range battery can achieve 580 horses. Both provide peak torque of 775 lb ft.
Fuel efficiency is rated at 61 or 63 mpge for highway driving and 76 or 78 mpge for city driving, according to EPA estimates.
How to Choose From the Trim Levels
Ford trim levels including the Pro, XLT, Flash, Lariat, Platinum, and Platinum Black special editions.
If you want a hardworking truck that is as budget-friendly as it is high tech, you should aim for the Lightning Pro. Equipped with the standard battery, it has extensive driver assistance as well as good dash infotainment features. If you are looking to save money on a new electric truck, the Lightning Pro price is sure to make you smile.
As a more powerful package with more amenities, the Lightning XLT is a favorite with many automotive journalists. It’s especially smart when upgraded to the extended range battery.
Taking the style up to premium, you can find the Flash extended range trim and the better-known Lariat extended range trim. These are serious-yet-fancy trim levels with more amenities and more tech toys.
When you choose the Platinum or Platinum Black, you are getting every driver assistance function, trailer aid, and semi-autonomous system available. Plus there’s the handsome interior discussed in the next section.
How Luxurious are Platinum Trim Levels?
As you would expect from any Ford, the Platinum edition is full-on luxury. No expense is spared in acquiring top quality materials. Then the fit and finish is achieved at a craftsman’s level of excellence. Already the cabin is super spacious with 131.9 cubic feet of wiggle room.
Style is assured through the use of Nirvana leather and real wood interior trim. On the 2024 Lightning Platinum Black edition, the truck’s black exterior elements are echoed in the cabin. Naturally this means utilizing luxe black Nirvana leather for the seats.
Drivers enjoy Active Motion, 10-way power adjustable chairs. The driver’s seat and front passenger seat have memory features as well as power-heat and power-ventilation. Rear seats have extended cushions and a power-heat function.

What is Different About the Lightning Platinum Black Edition?
The Platinum Black Lightning takes the top trim level and adds a black-out style in an original way. In fact, the matte black wrap makes it the first production truck ever with the matte-wrap treatment.
Adding to the originality, the Agate Black roof is so glossy that there is no definition between it and the darkened glass greenhouse. This continuous reflective surface is the perfect contrast for the non reflective matte wrapped body.
Lightning-specific graphics dress up the roof glass. At night, the black-on-black Lightning badge glows with the light from passing headlights. Even more fun, the signature light bar wears a smoked appearance.
Then there’s the detailing that adds black accents to every possible element. This includes matte-black wheels with black lug nuts, Agate Black door handles, and agate gloss accents on the power-deployable running boards. The 2024 Ford Lightning Platinum Black is a special edition limited to 2,000 orders.
Can the Ford Lightning Tow?
The tow ratings for the Lightning are 5,000, 7,700 or 10,000 pounds. A class IV trailer hitch and trailer sway control are standards.
In a typically unique way, the Ford tow mode goes further than other brands. It asks for input about weight and size. This allows it to predict the electric range.
Important Ford technologies are on tap for towing or hauling assistance. This includes technology such as a trailer-included blind spot system, Smart Trailer Tow Connect, a Trailer Brake Controller, and specialized Reverse Guidance. There’s a Pro Back Up Assist dial that allows drivers to point the trailer in one direction without changing the trajectory of the vehicle.
How Flexible is the Lightning Cargo Bed?
The Lightning bed is a 5.5-foot box that offers an initial 52.8 cubic feet of hauling space. Maximum payload is 2,235 pounds.
Some of our favorite features are the available tailgate work surface on the power down tailgate. A tailgate step helps you in and out of the bed. For help with loading payload or attaching the trailer, there’s an available Onboard Scales with Smart Hitch.
In addition to LED box lighting, there are available LED mirror-mounted spotlights. An available bed camera can be added to the 360-degree camera system to help you see what’s happening with your load.
How is the Ford Electric Truck Different from the Regular F150?
Other than the powertrain, there are some key differences. For instance, the F-150 offers an extra-large infotainment display in keeping with its high tech image. There’s one configuration with the SuperCrew and the 5.5-foot box.
The frunk, the up-front trunk, is a generous 14.5 cubic feet of space. If you want to compare that, you’ll find that the average small sedan is lucky if it has a trunk that large. You can pack it with up to 400 pounds of luggage and gear.
If the electricity goes out, the Lightning battery can be used to power a home. There are a few steps you have to do ahead of time, but once everything is in place, you have a home generator like few others.
