6 Ways Mach E Challenges Ioniq 5 to Do Better

In this Mach-e vs Ioniq 5 EV comparison, you’ll get a look at what the two electric vehicles do differently and learn which EV can best serve your needs.

  1. Clever Design Elements

Buying a new car should be fun. Too often that fun doesn’t include pretty or interesting SUVs. That’s not true with the 2023 Mach e. It leans into its sports car heritage The clever design hints at the electric-car’s muscle. It wears rocker panels and a black-painted rear spoiler.

Both electric SUVs have aerodynamic exteriors without the traditional gas-engine grille. However, only the Ford has exclusive Pony Projection Lamps. These lights welcome passengers at night. Another exclusive feature, the painted wheels wear a center black Pony graphic.

In addition, only the Ford EV has the E-Latch system. This provides push buttons to open the doors. FordPass Connect App allows owners to remotely start and lock or unlock the vehicle.

  2. True Utility Vehicle

Utility is another place where the 2023 Mach e is well positioned. Like any good Ford, every inch of space is put to good use. As such, it has a slightly larger cargo space, offering almost 3 cubes more than the 2023 Ioniq 5. Plus it has an adjustable load floor for extra utility.

In addition, there’s a lockable front compartment -- or frunk -- with almost 5 cubes of space. You’ll have extra space for personal items or gear. An integrated drain allows it to be used as a cooler. Or it can hold dirty boots and then be washed clean.

The Ioniq 5 has less than 1 cubic foot of space in its frunk. That’s tiny! To make sure the Mustang Mach E had a spacious cabin, engineers worked to tuck the battery pack under the floor. This left plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Second row legroom exceeds 38 inches.

  3. Performance Specs

With a name like Mustang, the Mach e has big tires to fill. Ford makes sure it can live up to its name. In this graphic, you can see how the Ford is a more powerful model than its rival.

It’s no wonder that a US News and World Report critic declared the Mach e more athletic than the Ioniq 5. Of course you’d expect that from the Mustang Mach e GT, but what’s surprising is that every Mach e has much better horsepower whether it has a standard range or extended range battery. It’s also true whether it is rear wheel drive or all wheel drive.

  1. High Tech Interior

The two EVs have high tech interiors with digital gauge clusters behind the steering wheel. A 12.3 touchscreen is standard on the Ioniq 5. Mach E models have a massive screen, measuring 15.5 inches. The size and vertical placement allows it to have big icons that are easy to read and use. Ford includes a large volume button for those who like to do things manually.

Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are on board both EVs. The Ford Mach E pulls ahead with standard navigation. Plus it has a wireless charger on all models as well as modern USB-c ports. Both have a large digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel.

  2. Electric Driving Range

The electric range is vitally important to those who are buying EVs. Drivers want the longest possible distance before they need to stop and charge their vehicle.

Looking at the all-wheel drive models, the Mustang Mach e added 13 more miles for the 2023 model year. This gives it a 34-mile advantage over its rival. Lastly, the RWD Ford pulls slightly ahead of the RWD Hyundai by a margin of 3 or 9 extra miles.

  1. Automatic Driving Functions

For years, Ford has offered automatic driving functions for parallel and perpendicular parking. So, of course, it makes the latest upgrades to these systems available on the Mach e. In a similar way, Hyundai has developed its own automatic parking system and is offering it on the Ioniq 5.

When it comes to semi-automatic driving, Ford has created a system that is rated Level 2, but is pushing toward level 3. The BlueCruise system can travel up to 130,000 miles of mapped highway, and that number is always going up. Furthermore, Ford puts a driver-facing camera on the steering column. This watches the driver to make sure that they are always ready to engage as needed.

According to a recent Consumer Reports test, Blue Cruise appears to be safer than either Tesla Autopilot or GM SuperCruise. The critics note that the Ford system is a better collaborator with the driver. For instance, when the driver needs to avoid a pothole, the system doesn’t turn off. Instead it waits and takes back over when the driver’s intervention is complete.

Hyundai also has a Highway Driving Assist system that is similar to Ford. However, it is not available on all Ioniq 5 models. Ford makes BlueCruise available in packages for all of its EVs, and over-the-air updates can make these systems more potent in the future.
