2023 Ford Ranger Review | Midsize Towing Capacity
With lots of surprises in store, the 2023 Ford Ranger zooms into the midsize truck marketplace.
This truck starts at the top, since it builds upon the 2022 model’s excellent tow and payload capacity.
Overall the package is more competitive with excellent storage solutions, advanced connectivity, and digitized cockpit features. Rangers are, of course, the only midsize trucks with exclusive Ford towing and off-roading equipment.
Here’s what you should know about this small, but powerful midsize pickup.
Top Tow Rating Value
If your purpose in buying a truck is to get one tough enough to haul a big load, there are many midsize trucks that will fall short of your goals. The 2023 Ford Ranger is different. On every model, an affordable tow package increases tow capacity to 7,500 pounds.
Is this significant? It is the top tow rating value in the midsize market. Since 7,500 pounds is equal to many light duty full-size pickups, the Ford midsize truck price with tow package is absolutely the least expensive way to tow more.
Towing capacity doesn’t change even if you choose the Ford Ranger super cabs vs the crew cabs. Furthermore, it doesn’t change if you stick with rear wheel drive or add four wheel drive.
Let’s see how this compares. You can spend about the same amount for a Toyota Tacoma and will lose 1,000 pounds of capability. Likewise, you could choose a similar Nissan Frontier mid size truck and tow ratings would drop by 780 pounds.
On the other hand, you could pay a minimum of $5,000 more for 150 pounds of extra capability from certain Jeep Gladiators. For that matter, you could pay $5,000 more with a new Honda Ridgeline and drop tow ratings to 5,000 pounds. It’s all a matter of your priorities.
Performance Guaranteed
When it comes to performance and road capability, Ford Rangers for sale have one of the most tried and tested engines in the midsize arena. This turbo four-cylinder powertrain generates 270 horsepower and kicks out 310 lb-ft of torque.
With this Ecoboost torque, Ford aims squarely at the top of the tow ratings. A 10-speed automatic transmission assists with targeting torque to slower speeds to assist with trailering. No other midsize has this sophisticated gear set-up.
Ecoboost fuel economy is another way that the Ranger challenges every rival in the midsize truck class.
Payload and Bed Equipment
Payload is another place this truck excels. The 2023 model inherits a healthy lead in payload ratings based on the 2022 Ford Ranger. With the SuperCrew RWD models, you can load up to 1,770 pounds in the bed. With the SuperCab, the rating is 1,860 pounds.
If you like to compare, consider that this is almost 100 pounds more than either the Toyota Tacoma or the Nissan Frontier at its best.
Exterior Colors and Package Upgrades
On the XL, the STX Appearance Package is recognizable by its box decal and racy 17-inch silver-painted alloy wheels. Additional equipment includes fog lamps. Inside the seats are covered in premium Ebony cloth upholstery.
You can dress up the Ford Ranger XLT with the Chrome Appearance package. This adds fog lamps and handsome chrome bumpers. If you want to go a different direction, the Sport Appearance Package adds more personality and flair with magnetic painted exterior accents.
With the STX Special Edition, the STX trim gains an equipment group, including the Sync 3 touch screen and dual-zone climate controls. Special blacked-out accents make the Black Appearance package very popular on all trim levels. A bed liner is included for greater utility.
Exterior colors include nine different shades. Azure Gray captures the blue-gray of a cloudy sky. If you love to make a statement, you may prefer Hot Pepper, Race Red or Velocity Blue. There’s also oxford white, shadow black, carbonized gray, cactus gray, and iconic silver.
The Ranger Splash is a favorite with those who want a truck with lots of personality. Sport bolstered chairs wear a distinctive tuxedo stripe. Color accents include orange stitching and a fun carbon weave look.
Splash exteriors face you with a blacked-out grille with orange accent nostrils. From the curb, you’ll notice graphics along the side. There are tailgate graphics and a special box decal, too.
Trim Level Lineup
Shoppers will recognize the Ranger lineup. XL trims are the most affordable, and they are well equipped for the modern driver.
SuperCabs seat four, or you can have the second row deleted for full storage capacity. Even so, the backseat offers better legroom. At 30.5 inches, it has almost 6 inches more than the Toyota Tacoma, four inches more than the Nissan Frontier, and two inches more than the Chevrolet Colorado.
For 5 passengers, the SuperCrew is especially roomy. Four full-size doors make it easier for adults to enter or exit. You can utilize underseat storage for extra organization and/or safety.
XLT models add full infotainment capability including a large touchscreen. A driver’s productivity screen is its companion on the dash. Cloth upholstery is upgraded to premium cloth for a better look and longer-lasting comfort.
Other upgrades include dual-zone automatic air conditioning. These climate controls operate according to the individual’s temperature choice.
Ranger Lariats are more upscale with two rows of leather upholstery. A power-adjustable 8-way driver’s chair is matched with a power-adjustable 6-way front passenger seat. In the Ranger Tremor, the upholstery is spiced up with colorful stitching and Miko suede inserts.
Off Road Fun for All
Wearing extra skid plates for off-roading protection, Tremors have an aggressive 2-bar grille with a magnetic-colored surround. Instead of orange, the Tremor’s nostrils are red. The magnetic color accent shows up again in the flares that decorate the wheel arches.
Building off of either the XLT or Lariat, you can enjoy life behind the wheel of a Ranger Tremor. Always a 4x4, these SuperCab models increase ground clearance. To combat bounce, they have Fox shocks and a heavy duty suspension. Trail Control reduces driving duties, helping you focus on direction. Tremors are happy to compare standard features with the Tacoma TRD Pro any time.
With the Tremor or the FX4 Off-road package, drivers enjoy the benefits of Ford terrain management. FX4 drivers can tackle the trail with the package’s off-road suspension and electronic rear differential. The FX2 package adds this equipment, allowing the Ranger RWD model to venture further off the road.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Since this is a Ford, you can bet it offers CoPilot360 driver assistance. This includes a forward collision warning that can trigger an emergency autobrake. This system watches for people too, and the pedestrian watch can trigger that same autobrake when milliseconds really count.
Lane centering technology helps this midsize truck avoid side swiping other vehicles. Likewise, a blind spot monitor works to reduce the chances of hitting a neighbor vehicle. Unique in full-size and midsize trucks alike, Ford BLIS includes the ability to watch over the trailer. That’s smart technology at work.
