2023 Ford Escape Review | ST Line
The 2023 Ford Escape is totally new. As such, the technologies, design, and overall packaging are revised for the most contemporary feel and function.
In this thorough write-up, you’ll get the information you need if you are curious about the new design. You’ll also learn about the line-up to assist with making the best choice for your lifestyle.
All New Escape
There’s renewed new curb appeal with a bolder hood and sculpted grille set off the front. LED-outlined headlamps can be connected by an LED toolbar on the dressy Platinum models.
As the most spacious Escape ever, this SUV is better for families and anyone else who needs the backseat regularly. Driver’s legroom is a hefty 42.4 inches, but the second row passengers are almost as lucky. Their leg room measures 40.7 inches.
Standard gas models have 104 cubic feet of passenger space. Hybrid editions are quite roomy with 102.2 cubic feet.
If you step up from the S model, the Escape Active provides important features. The air conditioning operates with dual-zone automatic controls. Drivers can relax in an 8-way power chair. Ice Blue lighting adds a special glow to the instrument panel. A panoramic vista roof is on the menu.
Cargo Versatility
Escapes have sliding seats that allow owners to utilize extra cargo space and still maintain seating. Otherwise, the seats slide to provide an extra 5.9 inches of wiggle room for second-row passengers.
You can pack a lot in the 37.5 cu ft of cargo space in the hold. For moving day or any time you have a load, you can fold seats to enjoy 65.4 cu ft of space.
Escape S models start you off with convenient keyless access. Active trims have push button start and Ford Intelligent Access. This trim level also adds a power liftgate.
Standard Performance and Handling
As always Ford offers you Ecoboost engines to give you maximum power with minimized fuel use. The first is a 181-horsepower unit that generates 190 pound-feet of torque. Controlled by an 8 speed automatic transmission, this powertrain gives you confidence behind the wheel.
Stepping up, the 2-liter Ecoboost kicks out 250 horsepower. The same automatic transmission controls 280 lb-ft of torque, harnessing it at slow speeds for greater take-offs and high speeds to maintain velocity.
Adding to the line-up, there’s the Escape HEV and PHEV. You can learn more about these electric vehicles in a separate review.
Handling and Towing
The 1.5-L Ecoboost is paired with your choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive while the 2-L is strictly all-wheel drive. Tow ratings are 2,000 or 3,500 pounds.
Front-wheel drive is better for all weather thanks to its slippery drive mode. Individual wheel braking helps stop skidding. Likewise torque vectoring control moves torque to individual wheels to assist with curve control.
All-wheel drive provides better help in the worst weather, in snow, or on the trail. Ford’s electric power-assisted steering has been shown to offer more precision as it responds to driver’s commands.
Interior Themes and Exterior Colors
Escape exterior colors provide a fun range of choices. If you prefer a sleeker look, there’s Agate Black, Carbonized Gray or Iconic Silver. You may aim for personality colors and even there you enjoy a choice. These include shades of Atlas Blue or Vapor Blue and Cinnabar Red or Rapid Red.
The ST Line and ST models turn the look in a sporty direction. It upgrades the grille with black mesh. Rear design cues are especially noticeable with the unique skid plate and single-wing spoiler.
Sporty Models
If you want a sports model, you have only to choose the ST Line to get the fun design you want. Red accent stitching brings together different cabin elements. This racy element is on the flat-bottom steering wheel and other soft touches.
Upholstery combines the Active X leather-like look with durable cloth inserts. Drivers will appreciate an 8-way power chair.
However, if you want a speedier engine to go with it, you’ll want the Ford Escape ST. It’s got all the fun red accents and amenities of the ST Line. Heated front seats and power-heat steering wheel are standard.
Enhanced Voice Recognition
Ford’s 13.2-inch touch screen sets a new infotainment system standard with enhanced voice recognition. This Sync 4 system has an advanced interface. The display itself has an enhanced touch capability.
Of course, the standard touchscreen is quite smart. It is an 8-inch display that responds like a tablet to your touch. Siri and other iPhone features are easy to access with Apple CarPlay. Android Auto coordinates with Android phones to provide apps, a smart assistant and more.
FordPass Connect adds more connectivity. This can include WiFi for up to ten devices in the Escape or around it if the compact SUV is parked. A password protects your security. Whether in front or rear seats, you can have access to USB ports for charging.
Top Trims
If you want a top trim level, you’ve got even more choices. The Escape Platinum is dressed for success in every way. There’s leather upholstery on the dual power-adjustable, power-heated chairs. The cockpit has two large screens, including the digital instrument cluster.
Parking is easier with the SurroundView Camera, upgrading from the regular rearview system. Built-in navigation adds to what the Sync 4 system can do. Shoppers can add a Panoramic Vista Roof to really open up the cabin.
Clearly Ford has positioned this compact SUV to outshine its rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR V. The new look and size further differentiate it from its sibling, the Bronco Sport.
Driver Assist Features
Every Ford has CoPilot360 driver assist features. This SUV is covered up front with a system that watches for collision dangers and for people or cyclists in the road. This can trigger the emergency autobrake. To reduce side collision danger, there’s BLIS to watch the blind spot and a lane keeping assist to watch the lane lines.
Only Ford is offering Evasive Steering Assist. This provides support if a driver needs to swerve to miss a car or obstacle. It prevents oversteer that might put it into the path of yet another vehicle.
Greater Automation
The SUV-maker has developed its own Intelligent Active Cruise Control. When engaged, it maintains speed according to the driver’s expectation. Yet it can slow and go as traffic moves. Furthermore, it can recognize speed signs and even slow the vehicle to the correct speed. Lastly, it has lane centering assistance to make cruise control even more useful.
Parking is already easier with the rearview camera and rear cross-traffic warning. However, only Ford offers both Active Park Assist and Park Out Assist to address difficult parking challenges automatically.
