2022 Ford Expedition Review | 2022 Ford Expedition
When it comes to 3 row SUVs, few are as well-regarded as the 2022 Ford Expedition. The handsome family chauffeur has many new features and capabilities.
Among the systems that have been improved, you’ll find better dash tech, safety features, driver assistance, and automated features. The Ford flagship SUV now leads its class in available driver-assist technologies. In fact, there are many best-in-class elements of this ride.
This review details the features on the Ford Expedition Max as well as the standard build. Keep scrolling to find the information that is most important to you.
Expedition Specifications
The large cabin has a total passenger volume of 171.9. That surpasses most three-row SUVs and minivans. Legroom is 41.5 inches on the second row and 36.1 inches on the third row. With so much space, every person can get comfortable.
Cargo capacity is 19.3 cubic feet (regular) or 36 cubic feet (Max). Behind the second row, there’s 57.5 or 73.3 cubic feet of cargo space, and that can grow to either 63.6 or 79.6 cubic feet thanks to the 2022 Ford Expedition’s versatility. Maximum cargo space behind the first row is 104.8 cubic feet. On the Expedition Max, it has 121.5 cubic feet.
The 2021 Expedition introduced the first two-row Expedition with a massive cargo hold and room for five. It has even more interior space. Phoenix AZ drivers really seem to like all of the choices they get with the Expedition lineup.
Expedition Trim Levels (Standard Frame)
XL STX models have five seats, tri-zone climate controls, and a power-adjustable driver’s chair. There’s a long list of dash tech features including the 12 inch touchscreen. It also has a long list of driver’s assistance.
The XLT edition adds a third row to carry more people. This feature is power-folding to make it easier to prepare it for hauling extra gear. The XLT High package adds second-row captain’s chairs and a power-adjustable front passenger seat. Other features on this Ford Expedition for sale include a wireless charger and a power liftgate.
Offered only on the regular Expedition frame, the Timberline has perforated cloth and ActiveX upholstery. A deep tangerine stitching and the SUV logo add interesting color contrast. The doors wear a deep cypress trim panel that also features the tangerine stitching. A Timberline High package brings it more in line with the other upper trims in terms of technology and entertainment.
Style Choices for Standard and Max Editions
Limited trim level builds on the XLT High package. It has a Panoramic Vista Roof and a 12-speaker B&O sound system. The front two rows are covered in leather upholstery. All three rows can be power-heated, and the front row has power-ventilation.
This model also gets the hands-free capability for its power liftgate. The Stealth Edition Package adds blacked-out exterior details and red interior stitching.
With a lovely Del Rio and Ebony leather interior, there’s no mistaking the Expedition King Ranch. This stylish model has the largest touchscreen, most extensive audio system, and everything on the Limited.
If you want something even more unique, the Platinum cabin wears a soft Carmelo leather with more soft touches everywhere. Massaging capability is added to the front row. Plus, this flagship edition of Ford’s flagship SUV is the first Expedition to offer BlueCruise.
Dash Technology
The 12-inch touchscreen features SYNC® 4. With split-screen viewing, you can maintain your audio menu while navigation is appearing in the other half of the screen. Among the XL standards, the system has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has four USB ports and Wi-Fi capability.
Another best-in-class feature on this large SUV, the 15.5-inch touchscreens are portrait oriented displays. Machine learning and driver input allow it to tailor itself to your needs. Unique interactive digital cards are actually easier to use than traditional menus. By using Ford Power-up Software, the manufacturer has made it possible for owners to improve their system as upgrades become available.
A 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster can be added to complement the entertainment screen. This system allows drivers to get information on demand. The system can display navigation maps or instructions, and it can provide off-roading data.
The Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker sound system is already a premium offering. However, the 22-speaker B & O system has the most speakers available in this class. That’s 360-degrees of sound.
The available rear-seat entertainment isn’t like the one from your childhood. It has touch screens, high definition clarity, and 16 gigs of storage. Users can stream content or watch downloaded programs. With Amazon Fire TV10, users can find content from many popular apps.
Performance
Everything about Expedition performance is designed to give the driver confidence. The big rig has a standard Ecoboost V6. This unit cranks out 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Limited editions boost horsepower to 400.
The ten-speed automatic transmission offers more help at low speeds and smoother sailing at higher speeds. Similar to the Ford F150 10-speed, this smart system is also more fuel efficient.
Fuel economy is further enhanced by the new active grille shutters that channel airflow and minimize drag. Stop-start technology reduces waste in stop-and-go situations such as redlights and drive-throughs.
New for the Ford Expedition 2022, an Active Air Dam is available to improve aerodynamics. This deploys when driving over 40 mph. It will retract when the speed lowers for city driving.
If you want even more get-up-and-go, the high-output engine produces 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. That’s best in class. The Stealth Performance Edition adds a sport-tuned suspension for racier performance. It sounds right too with its dual exhaust system.
Towing
Standard tow ratings are 6,500 or 6,600 pounds on the 4x4 Expedition, rear wheel drive Expedition or the Expedition Max. However, with the Heavy Duty package, the Expedition Max can tow 9,000 pounds, and the regular Expedition 4WD can tow 9,200 pounds. Even better, the Expedition 2WD can tow 9,300 pounds with its regular Ecoboost V6.
Ford helps with trailering in many other ways, such as standard trailer sway control and a tow-haul drive mode. On the road, drivers can utilize blind spot monitoring for most trailers. The trailer tow package includes a 360-degree camera system. With trailer reverse guidance, the driver has far fewer worries.
When backing up, the exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist is even easier than the one on the 2021 Ford Expedition. Now the system can recognize the trailer and measure its dimensions without input from the driver. Using a control knob, the driver can maneuver the trailer into a space while the Expedition stays on a straighter path.
Standard Ground Clearance and Off-Road Capability
The SUV ground clearance is a generous 9.8 inches in the Expedition and 9.7 inches on the Expedition Max 4WD. Obviously, the four-wheel drivetrain lets the Expedition do more if it encounters trail conditions.
Terrain management settings include mud-ruts, grass-gravel-snow, and sand. 4x4 editions can be equipped with a hi-low transfer case. They can also be ready for under two feet in water fording capability.
The available Continuously Controlled Damping system can help make trips more enjoyable whether on road or off. All new Road Preview keeps you aware of deep ruts or bumps in the road ahead. This also benefits drivers off road. The system uses a camera mounted in the grille to watch the road and send live footage to the dash.
Off-roading and the Expedition Timberline Edition
The Timberline trim level shares much in common with the Ford Bronco and Ford Raptor. Furthermore, it has best-in-class available ground clearance. Not only does it surpass the Jeep Waggoneer in this category, but it also weighs less than its Jeep rival. That’s always an asset on the trail.
At 10.6 inches, the SUV benefits from its modified suspension and off-road shocks. A wide track helps it claim excellent approach and departure angles for a vehicle this size. Like the Ford Bronco, these angles are maximized by Trail Turn Assist, a class exclusive feature. This shrinks the turning radius to accommodate a tight squeeze better.
The Ford Raptor shared its tough underbody shields to give the Expedition extra protection when passing over brush. The SUV’s off-road tires are 33-inch Goodyear Wranglers. With all of this going for it, there has never been a more off-road capable Expedition than the newest Timberline trim.
Safety
Parents can rest easier knowing that the Expedition earned all five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are four seats with full LATCH attachments. Many 3-row SUVs have just 2 or 3. The rear occupant alert is a sign to caregivers to make sure to check the back rows.
The blind spot information system is standard, helping to watch the sides of the vehicle. In a similar way, the lane keeper is trying to keep the vehicle inside its lane to avoid side crashes. The new road edge detection feature helps ensure that the Expedition stays safely on the pavement.
Ford Co-Pilot360™ includes features to help prevent a forward collision. This system includes dynamic brake support and automatic emergency braking. Still a rare feature on SUVs today, post-collision braking is standard. It is meant to prevent further damage after impact.
Other elements include an Intersection Assist to help prevent turning into oncoming traffic. Evasive steering assist is meant to help you avoid obstacles and yet steer safely at the same time.
Automatic Assistance
Adaptive Cruise Control recognizes stop-and-go traffic and regulates the SUV’s speed to match. It can be paired with lane centering technology. With speed sign recognition, it even knows when the speed limit goes up or down.
Standard on the Platinum trim level, Ford BlueCruise can operate the vehicle on certain divided highways. These designated blue zones allow this nearly automated driving. The driver-facing camera system makes sure the driver is always ready to take over from this hands free driving feature.
Parking Technologies
Recognizing that parking is difficult, the Expedition starts drives off with rear cross traffic alert and braking. This active feature complements the rearview camera and rear parking sensors.
The available reverse brake assist helps to watch for people or vehicles in the path of the rearview camera. This helps reduce the chances of hitting an obstacle, person or car. A full parking assistance system can take over and do much of the work for you. The 360-degree camera system is a bonus in parking and off-roading.
