Size, Spaciousness, and Cargo Space
The 2022 Escape is 180 inches long with a 106-inch wheelbase. Seating 5, it has 40-inches of front-row headroom and 39.3 inches of second row headroom. Legroom is 42.4 inches up front and a remarkable 40.7 inches on the back row. Hybrid second-row legroom is slightly less, but still generous at 38.9 inches.
Passenger volume is 104 cubic feet in the standard models and 102.2 cubes in the Ford Escape SE Sport Hybrid. LATCH attachments are on both rear outboard seats.
The large cargo area can handle 37.5 cubic feet of luggage and gear. The Ford Escape Hybrid Plug In has 34.4 cubic feet in its cargo hold. On all trims, rear seats can split-fold. They also slide to provide more space for passengers or cargo as needed.

Performance
Standard on the S, SE and SEL Escape trim levels, a remarkable inline-3 is the base engine. This powertrain cranks out 181 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. It only needs regular unleaded fuel. WIth the standard front-wheel drive, fuel economy is 34 miles per gallon on the highway and 30 miles per gallon combined driving.
The SEL and Titanium have their own Ecoboost inline-four. This engine generates a hefty 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It still earns 31 mpg on the highway. A crisp 8 speed automatic transmission is paired with both the base and Ecoboost engine choices.
The Ford Escape Hybrid SE, SEL and Titanium models earn 44 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 41 mpg combined. The 2022 Ford Escape SE Hybrid AWD SUV earns 43/37/40 mpg. The combination of an Atkinson Cycle inline-four, an electric motor, and hybrid battery generates 200 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque.
Ford Escape SE Plug-in Hybrid SUVs add a second motor but keep the four-cylinder engine. As a gas electric PHEV, this adds enough miles of electric power to handle a regular commute. The gas engine is a backup when the power supply runs low. Ford Escape incentives can make this ride a perfect match for your lifestyle and budget.
Interior Trim Levels
The ergonomic cockpit features a fully-adjustable steering wheel, 6-way adjustable driver’s chair, and a space-saving rotary gear shift dial. Ice Blue lighting adds a dash of color and fun. Upholstery colors include dark earth gray, sandstone, and ebony choices.
Many will find the Escape SE is the sweet spot. It has an 8-inch touch screen that has swipe capability and pinch-to-zoom. The seats are updated to a special bucket seat in a unique cloth upholstery. A panoramic vista roof is now an option even on this affordable trim level.
The SE Convenience package adds many more conveniences, providing a halfway point between the SE and the SEL. This trim’s standard features include a power liftgate, dual-zone automatic climate controls, power-heat front seats, and power-heat steering wheel. The front seats are sport contour buckets. ActiveX upholstery is standard along with an 8-way power chair for the driver.
Escape Titaniums upgrade to a 10-way power driver’s chair with memory capability and a 6-way power passenger chair. New style details include unique interior accents and ambient lighting with floor lights.
A Titanium Elite Package adds a premium B&O sound system, a head-up display, HD radio, and a wireless charging pad. This adds mini-perforated leather upholstery for the ultimate luxury.
Technology
From a remote start system to satellite radio connectivity, this small SUV offers all of the technologies people want in a car today. An available Wi-Fi hotspot can work with up to 10 devices.
Ford Pass Connect adds a remote starter that can lock and unlock the vehicle remotely. You can use it to check the hybrid engine status and make sure there’s enough gas or electric power for your next drive.
The S trim level has a 4.2-inch LCD screen, AppLink and enhanced voice recognition. SE trims have the larger touchscreen which has more capacity, better response capability, and more content via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Exterior Colors and Special Packages
The Escape colors include a crisp Oxford White, a handsome Star White Metallic Tri-Coat, or a mysterious Agate Black Metallic. There are other fun metallic paint colors including Atlas Blue, Stone Blue, Rapid Red, Carbonized Gray, Iconic Silver, and Iced Blue Silver.
Available only on the SEL 2.0 Ecoboost edition, the SEL Stealth AWD package adds more mystery to the SUV’s personality. Curb appeal is assured through multiple black elements including the upper grille, the painted wheels, front and rear skip plates, and special badging. Inside the Active X seating includes soft Miko Suede inserts.
There are six wheels available. The standard sparkle silver-painted steel wheels can be upgraded to shadow-painted aluminum alloys. The 18-inch wheels have dark stainless-painted pockets.
The 19-inch wheels may be luster nickel painted or ebony painted aluminum. A final choice is the intricate 19-inch machined face aluminum pattern with its tarnished painted pockets.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Ford Co-Pilot360 includes a long list of driver assist features whether you choose the Plug-in Hybrid SEL or go for the basic SE. This includes the pre collision system with its automatic braking system. It watches for forward collision dangers or pedestrians and may assist in stopping the Escape to avoid danger.
A lane assist is also standard. Now there is road edge detection. Between the two, the vehicle’s system is watching to make sure you are always moving safely within the road’s markings. It’s only logical that a compact SUV as advanced as the Ford Plug In Hybrid Escape would have this type of technology.
Standard on some trim levels, the Ford CoPilot Assist is available as a package on the SE.
